I have a piercing question???
Where do you draw the line, as an employer, to how much visible tatoos your employies have? Im not directing this question to any one who owns a tatoo shop. Does an employer have the right to fire/not hire someone if they have tatoos all over their face, or body piercings?
Would this be grounds for discrimination?
Just curious.

I believe that as an employer, you have the right to require certain standards of personal grooming and appearance depending of course on the job.
It should not be grounds let's say if someone applies for a job to work at the front desk of a Hilton hotel.

I reserve the right to terminate any employee who wears visible tatoos and/or piercings (other than on the ear). It's in our Code of Conduct, which every new hire must sign to come into the company.
If the job was a "meet the public" type then I would be somewhat stricter than if it were a construction site .
It isn't illegal to deny employment to someone for having a pierced face , or a tattoo sleeve , and it shouldn't be . You can't legally deny employment to a smoker , but you can tell them when and where to light up .

Hey Bernie,
The administration at my school dropped a bombshell as the school year opened last week. A new dress code specifying no visible piercings other than ears. There never was a restriction before, but the argument is that employers are not likely to accept unorthadox piercings in their employees. (I teach a career technical, i.e. vocational school). It's ruffled some feathers, but the kids are adapting.

I work in a very conservative school. The kids here can't have any visable tattoos or visable body piercings. The only exception is the girls. They can have ear rings. I have yet to see it a problem. When you work with a bunch of rancher and farmers kids, you dot get all the fashion trends. My biggest problem is getting these kids to change boots after working the cattle in the morning.

Yes. They should have full authority not to hire, or fire at will for not meeting the dress code(s) they have put forth.
I work in advertising which is full of freaks and misenfranchised punks with strips of metal chunked through every imaginable visible body part - no one cares because it's a "creative" environment. But, the people that are out in front of the client certainly do not look like this and for good reason.

I had ear rings that Ive had employers ask me to remove I had my ears stretched out for about a year to a 0 gauge thats a little bit bigger then a regular ball point pen or pencil So basiclly if I wanted I could wear a ballpoint pen or pencil as an ear ring but I wore fairly tasteful earrings but my boss diddent like it so I just started wearing clear acrilic earrings and nothing more was ever said But I definatly wasent about to remove them for a job it cost a fair amount of money to stretch them out $70 for the original pericings at 14ga. then you have to buy every size earing between 14-0 and you dont stretch fast so I usually had 5-10 pairs of each size earring and there about $20 a pair so I had a nice chunk of money invested in my ears
