Default Here comes Charley

Looks like it will pack a punch by the time it hits Florida.MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECENTLY REPORTED BY AN AIR FORCE RESERVE
RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT ARE NEAR 105 MPH...165 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. THIS MAKES CHARLEY A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE ON THE
SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE. SOME STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST
DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS...AND CHARLEY COULD BECOME A CATEGORY
THREE OR MAJOR HURRICANE BEFORE IT MAKES LANDFALL ALONG THE SOUTH
COAST OF CUBA.

A bit of nit picking on my part so don't take this seriously, but the proper term is to 'batten down the hatches' a batten being a plank or heavy board used to secure the hatch covers of a hold on a ship. And I believe it is nearly impossible to be 2000 miles inland in the continental U.S. I may be wrong but I believe the maximum east-west distance is about 3600 miles making it physically impossible to be 2000 miles inland, I may be wrong on this point but I seem to recall it being about that.

I think you could be right.
West to east it be someing like 1800+ & north to south about the same& east to west also under some, but id have to measure to be sure.
Thanks for that info - but whatever they call it- batten down there/there stuff ...i hope they tied, nail sucure those things down there well .

Look like it will become a category three storm before it hits Tampa.

If your advised to leave the path of the storm refuse and you are killed do you think your insurance company should have to pay?

Don't know what made me think about that.

Category 4 now!! WOW what a storm. I've been on the phone with my brother for a day now telling him to get the heck out of there. He lives in Fort Myers ( right where it's going to make landfall). They've had mandatory evacuation, but he says he's getting a case of beer and a bottle of beam and sticking it out. He just moved to Fla. 2 years ago and says he wants to witness one first hand. I am a bit freaked out because he really doesn't know the magnitude of this thing. It's not like a ride at Disney!! Nothing to do now except wait and hope for the best. It's about 1 1/2 hours away now. Their expecting 12 - 18 foot surge where he lives.

I am in Clearwater. Man we dodged a bullet but I can tell you the devastation to the south of us is going to be unbelievable. Glad for us very unhappy for them.
We are getting reports from friends and acquaintances. Sustained winds of 105 mph reported in Wachula - 50-70 miles inland.
Widespread damages. Punta Gorda North Fort Myers Boca Grande and Port Charlotte hit hard not much left standing. Power out everywhere. Storm now headed toward Orlando should exit the east coast into the Atlantic around Daytona Beach or south of there.
Just Unbelievable the damages. Man I can't tell you how lucky the Tampa area was but south of here it is bad, very bad.
