Diane Fiensteins bill to extend and improve the Assault ban is on the Senate's docket. That doesn't mean it will be voted on right this minute but could come up at any time. Rumour is that the Senate will try to attached the bill to something that is desperately needed like defense funding or military spending. Call your Senators Today and tell then not to allow the extention to be attached to ANYTHING. The Bill number is SB 2498.

I just received an NRA-ILA email alert about a renewal bill in the House. [:@] The bill is H.R. 3831; here is the text of the alert.
Quote:
In 1994 the Clinton crime bill was enacted, and banning gun ownership by law-abiding citizens was offered as the solution to violent crime. But anti-gun politicians were only able to pass the portion of the law banning military-style semi-automatic firearms after agreeing to "sunset" the ban in a decade. With less than 100 days to go before the expiration of the 1994 Clinton gun ban, anti-gun activists across the nation are now making a new and desperate push to re-enact this ineffective legislation.
Despite not being able to offer even a shred of evidence over ten years that the Clinton gun ban has reduced crime, Rep. Michael Castle (R-DE) is sponsoring H.R. 3831 to extend this failed and discredited policy for another decade. To date, only a handful of congressmen are cosponsoring this bill to continue this misguided and useless policy.
Even one extremist gun ban group, the Violence Policy Center, has admitted that continuing the ban will not "make one whit of difference one way or another . . . if it doesn't pass, it doesn't pass."(National Public Radio, 3/11/2004)
I sent a letter to Tom DeLay this morning through snail mail asking him to keep his pledge to allow the assault ban to sunset. Maybe if some more of you guys wrote him and your representatives they would know we're paying attention. I wrote to President Bush about it too.

Take it from me, being vocal really can make a difference. I'm fortunate to live in a state that has steadily increased firearms rights with several major bills signed in the past several years. I have heard so many officials comment on their surprise in receiving so many phone calls and letters from activists. Politicians want votes, and they will listen to their constituents' concerns in order to attract them.
I must've sent the same letter several times to everyone in office since the AWB renewal effort began to heat up. And you know what? They keep track of those letters, and phone calls can really impact their ways of thinking about an issue.
Let your politicians know how you feel! You do have a voice in the matter!

Interesting that after all of the "I would never vote for a Democrat because they are out to take my guns" that it is a Republican is sponsoring this bill!!!! Just goes to show, only an idot votes for a party and not the candidate! I wonder if his Democratic opponent was pro or anti gun?

I understand what your saying Taz, but I think the record shows that there are far more Democrats voting on these issues than Republicans. We still have to be careful who we are electing and know what they stand for . And your right we can't vote straight across the board because some Republicans are not on our side either. John McCain comes to mind as well as Chaffee in the East.

Very true FFYG's but I feel it is very important to point out to our younger posters that there are pro gun dems and anti-gun repubs, heck we have a pro-gun Dem Governor in Va.

No need for you to point that out here! I realized that a couple years ago.
