Exploiting tragedy for political gain is nothing new for the media and the Brady Campaign, but this morning's appearance on NBC's Today Show reached a new low. Katie Couric and Sarah Brady used the tragic occasion of President Reagan's passing to shamelessly forward the gun-ban agenda with deliberate misinformation. Led by carefully crafted questions from Couric, Sarah Brady claimed that President Reagan wasn't actually an NRA member, and that he "worked hard" for passage of the so-called "assault weapons" ban.

In fact, President Reagan, the owner of an AR-15, was a strong and consistent supporter of the Second Amendment and the NRA. He was a long time member who actively courted the NRA's endorsement in both of his presidential campaigns, and was the first presidential candidate in history to receive that endorsement. He appeared on the cover of NRA magazines four times. In 1983 he was offered, and accepted, an NRA Honorary Life Membership, the highest honor bestowed by the NRA.

He was the first, and to date, only, sitting president to speak at our Annual Meetings, saying, in part, "The NRA believes America's laws were made to be obeyed and that our constitutional liberties are just as important today as 200 years ago. And by the way, the Constitution does not say Government shall decree the right to keep and bear arms. The Constitution says 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.'" In 1986, President Reagan signed the landmark Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA), and he never blamed law-abiding gun owners for the actions of criminals.

Ronald Reagan was one of the best presidents ever, and the best pro-Second Amendment president ever!
I posted his article on the Second Amendment, in the Guns forum by mistake. I was going to put it here! It is a very good read, and leaves no doubt about where President Reagan stood on the Second Amendment!

Somewhere along the way, networks like ABC, NBC and the rest forgot what the word "media" is all about and the responsibilities that go with being members of the press. There are thousands of hard-working journalists out there who work their butts off to present their readers/viewers with the news and detailed insight. But that is overshadowed because so much of today's national media is to the integrity of the journalism profession what Bill Clinton was to the integrity of the office of president. And it absolutely burns me up.

If they want to to give politically-driven organizations airtime or print space to use as their mouthpiece for furthering their agenda, so be it. There is a place for that. It is called the OpEd pages, or talk radio/tv. But please don't call it news. If I want opinion, I will read the OpEd pages or listen to talk radio. When I want news, I want NEWS. I don't want a half-arsed, biased attempt that is more propoganda than it is news and is fallicious besides.

SARAH BRADY IS A LIAR

I have a copy of a letter that Reagan wrote to the NRA in February 1985 and in his own words says he's a Life Member of the NRA. The letter appeared on the cover of the April 1985 issue of American Rifleman.

Don't know Charlie, The best I remember Assault Weapons was'nt heard of much during his presidency. The liberal anti-gunners have maken a mountain out of a mole hill with all this assault weapons issue the last few years.

Tom, I am absolutely at a loss for words that in this time of National Mourning for President Ronald Reagan. Your organization would allow such a false interview to be aired on national television. Actually even if we weren't mourning the loss of President Reagan at this time, the interview with Sarah Brady would still be outrageous.

Do you allow only people who share the same beliefs as you to spew their rhetoric on your programing? Why doesn't your organization allow equal time for rebutals? Your anchor Katie Couric should be removed from her job if she continues to show one sided , carefully planned out attacks on the NRA and other people she doesn't agree with. She allowed Sarah Brady to say that Ronald Reagan wasn't an NRA Life Member and that the NRA just mailed him a card. That's crap. The NRA made Ronald Reagan an Honorary Member, but he was already a Life member. Maybe you should have your anchors and so-called reporters do a little research before you allow them to embarrass your company.

On the cover of the February 1985 American Rifleman Magazine is a letter written by Ronald Reagan to Ray Arnette congratulating him on his Executive Vice President job. In the letter Reagan tells Arnette that he is an NRA life Member. Maybe you should allow someone to rebut the story that Katie allowed to go out to America as fact. Do something right and offer a correction to the story or allow someone who knows the other side to speak. You probably will claim the NRA has an agenda, but then again so does Sarah Brady. The only difference is the NRA has factual information and Sarah Brady lies.
