So there are 3.8 million 18-24 year olds either not in work or not in school. Seems that these people are more likely distracted than disconnected. Wouldn't want to move out of mommy's house and get a life. Video games are so much more fun!

RE: Disconnected youth?
That's a chunk of people...~1% of our population.
Pretty confusing though, as there could be a number of things happening. Just graduated HS or college, degree in hand with no job offers. Happening more nowadays. Applied to college---either undergrad or grad, and just waiting for start.
With an average national unemployment rate of ~5%, I'm not too alarmed. If this represents 1%, that means 25-65 comprises the other 4%, which is more frightening.

Well I see part of it being some parents who are afraid to make little Johnny or Suzy grow up! There is a guy I work with, 2 of his kids, both in thier early 20's, they are suckering him, they both live at home, one graduated colledge and is mooching of mom and dad, the other one dropped out, both of them can not hold even a menial job and every time they need money their DA father covers thier butts!!! I have told him time and time again he needs to give them the boot and quit covering their butts or he will supporting them for ever, he keeps telling me "Man I know your right, but I just can't do it!".

Remembered that you need to be looking for work in order to be considered unemployed by the feds and state governments.

Study did not comment on whether the young adults were applying to college, or looking for work. Does state that it equates to about 15% (nearly 1 in 6) of that age population, which equates to 85% either having a job or advancing in education. I can't imagine that the numbers can be much different for the other age groups...sounds like someone is worried about the future of our country. Don't worry, seems the other 85% are doing just fine
From the looks of the study, it is probably a socioeconomic poll, which can be quite biased due to sampling area and statistical analysis.
For example...
It states at the end that concern needs to be raised because a higher percentage of children were born weighing less than 5.5 pounds...but it doesn't give a statistical difference or what---if any---advancements in medicine were developed for these smaller babies to better handle life from 1996 to 2001. Hence, the 7.4 to 7.7% growth over 5 years could be significant if we are talking about a large number....they give no numbers.
Preterm care is progressing rapidly, changes every month, and I can't imagine that there's much cause for alarm. Just another bean counter looking for ants...

All my kids were told the same thing when they turned 18:
The ground is coming up fast , better flap your wings ...
Excellent!
I was told when I was in my early teens by my father- at age 18 you are moving out- you can move back in with mom and I after you make your first million. I hope to cash that chip in someday before my dad dies.

I am sure we are more "disconnected" then past generations. The world operates in a completely different way. But...it is not a hopeless situation. There are some young people I know, who are more mature, and better people, then half of the adult population as well.
Don't give up on us yet...

Good points Fro Man, There are enough good youngsters out there to make us better, remember when we were those youth, nobody thought we'd amount too much either? Do we?By know means am I old(mid 30's) but I remember it seemed like a stretch that my fellow classmen could run the country? But I think we'll and they'll do fine.
I heard a stat that was kind of along these lines, a poll done by Gallup showed that 60% of 18-29 year olds did not know who we fought in WWII?
