May 27, 2004 -- WASHINGTON "” When it comes to that great tradition of summer "” the backyard barbecue "” voters would rather fire up the grill with President Bush than John Kerry, a new poll showed yesterday.
Bush is the guest of choice over Kerry for flipping burgers, 50 percent to 39 percent, according to the national poll of the candidates' "regular guy" qualities by Quinnipiac University. Eleven percent were undecided.
More voters also would trust Bush, 46 percent to 41 percent, to run the family business.
But Kerry narrowly won out, 45 percent to 43 percent, on who they would rather have teach their children.
Team Bush declined to chew over the findings, but the Kerry campaign munched: "Americans trust John Kerry with their children, but I guess they trust George Bush not to burn their burger."
On the race for the White House, the poll puts Bush just slightly in front of Kerry, 43 percent to 42 percent.
"On the likeability, regular-guy quotient, probably Bush comes out a little bit better, but with who are you going vote for, it's a standoff," said Maurice Carroll, director of Quinnipiac polls.
"Does a guy's personality matter? The answer is yes," Carroll said. "To what extent? We don't know."
The poll questioned 1,160 registered voters by phone between May 18 and 24 and has a margin of error of 3 points.
Meanwhile, Kerry has decided to accept his party's nomination at the Boston convention in July after his suggestion that he might delay it sparked a firestorm, Democrats said last night.
Kerry aides had suggested that he might wait until Sept. 1 to formally accept the nomination so that he'd have another month to raise and spend unlimited amounts of money.
But that touched off angry complaints from Boston's mayor and, to the surprise of Kerry aides, from the media. There were also warnings that Kerry couldn't count on full-fledged TV convention coverage if it wasn't a full-fledged convention.
"They were absolutely stunned by the media pushback," said one veteran Democrat, adding that party activists "” other than Bostonians "” were ready to accept a "convention" that didn't really nominate Kerry.
Bush-Cheney spokesman Steve Schmidt had sniped: "Only John Kerry could be for the nominating convention and against the nomination" "” and warned Bush might hold giant competing rallies during the "convention" and demand equal TV time.
Both Bush and Kerry are expected to accept $75 million in taxpayer funds for the fall campaign. Kerry aides fretted he'd be at a disadvantage having to cover an extra month's expenses, because he gets nominated a month earlier.

And herein lies the most important part of this article...
This section not only acknowledges the traditional liberal media bias, but also indicates that the liberals are COUNTING ON IT! It also clearly demonstrates that the democraps not only like to play fast and loose with the rules, but they are counting on the media to have their backs and that the general American population is too stupid to notice. It's also apparent that the liberal leadership running Kerry's campaign thinks that they can get away with anything, which is fortunately still not COMPLETELY true...yet.
