Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Not to mention the private jet...50,000 SUV's he owns...his millionaire wife...

But dadgum, he knows how it feels to be poor like me, and will support me. John Kerry is the "common man." [&o]

GWB is a Cowboy right? They all do it. They all try and come across as the friend of the common man.

Charlie P is absolutely right. They do all try to come across as "the friend of the common man." The difference here is that some of them actually ARE friends of the common man.

Job growth is still lagging, things aren't going great in Iraq, we've got a $400 million deficit, etc and John Kerry still can't get traction against Bush. Why? Because he comes across as a Northeastern elitist who is stiff, uses big words and talks down his nose at us and GW doesn't.

There is no question that they both have blue-blood roots. But Bush, I think has overcome (or at least can hide) them. With Kerry, you imagine him in a luxury box at the horse races or a polo match not in the infield at Darlington. You imagine him on the slopes with the Hollywood types in Vale, not out bass fishing or duck hunting.

Whether I've been "sold a bill of goods" or not, I believe that GW would actually sit down and talk to one of us about hunting or fishing and, most important, enjoy doing it. But I don't think Kerry would give me or any of you, the time of day if he didn't need our vote.

I agree with your first point about many Southerners and their tendancy to look upon the Northeastern elite with disgust. And many Southern Democrats support conservatives because they are themselves conservative. They became Democrats when the Democrat Party was conservative. The Southern Democrat is a dying breed. Zell Miller (GA-D) is one of them.

But as to your second point, we'll have to agree to disagree. I believe that there ARE a lot of politicians from both parties that would see fit to converse with us and want to do it. And I think that Bush is one of them.

I think a certain amount of cynicism is healthy. But too much just creates hostility and paranoia. It's not always about the oil or the money or squashing the "common man."

And as far as your numbers are concerned, I'm not sure where you are getting them. It's the federal "debt" that is $7.1 trillion. It's been in the trillions for decades. It's the "deficit" that is currently $400 billion (just revised down from $500 bil). It sounds like symantics but it isn't. There's a huge distinction. And in terms of spending on Iraq, the president requested and was appropriated by the US Congress $87 billion, not $400 billion.
