Not long ago, a vote was taken on the University of Illinois campus regarding keeping the school mascot........Chief Illniwek. At football and basketball games a person dresses as an Indian chief as the mascot. 2/3 of the students responding saw nothing wrong with retaining the universitys' long time chief as the schools mascot.
Now, state Senate President Emil Jones, who is black, is urging UI officials to dump the long honored mascot or face possible budget cuts. Jones says the mascot and logo have created a hostile enviroment on campus and compares mascot supporters to segregationists! Jones also says," If our tax dollars are going to that university, and that university is using those tax dollars to permit stereotyping, then I think we should deal with it accordingly".
Stereotyping? Its just a school mascot for Gods' Sakes. Hostile enviroment? In Champaign, Illinois?

A local, long established Catholic University just changed its mascot's name from "The Crusaders" because it might be offensive to Muslims. I'll bet the folks in the Middle East are soooo relieved....
RE: Stereotyping, politically correct, and stupidity
I don't think this is about the "needs" of any body. It's about some jerk off that just has to make trouble for someone somewhere.
It's just a friggin mascot. Emil Jones needs to get over himself and concentrate on real issues.

Our high school is the Lebanon Warriors. Always has been.
Last year there was an Indian group that was supposed to come do some type of something or other, but they ended up refusing because of our mascot.
What gets me is, this mascot is something the kids are proud of. It's something viewed as strong and noble. It's not like they've got the warrior as a mascot and make fun of it and ridicule it. So what's the problem?
Also, three of my kids are tribal members. And I would bet my right arm there are tribal members in just about every high school in this country. Do they not have the right to have these mascots?
This whole issue just really ticks me off.

Cougar is slowly slipping to the right of the fencepost I'm afraid...
That's hogwash. If people would quit looking at skin-color when it comes to everything, the world would go around much easier.
My dad went to school in Pekin, Illinois and graduated high school from there. They were the "Pekin Chinks." I can see how that could be much more offensive than a dressed up school mascot.
BTW, they're the Pekin Dragons now...
