I would like to see athletic directors and coaches work for the city and not be associated with schools. I student taught in Australia and this is how it is ran down under. Every student can participate and kids are not cut from sports.
I was cut from basketball in 7th and 8th grade. No father in my picture so I gave it up. I played baseball until I was 15 and would have loved to continue in an organized setting. Ended up in track my junior and senior year and was tri captain but still would have liked to play baseball in the summer.
I got hired as a PE teacher in my very first interview and they told me because I never mentioned coaching. After that every interview has had coaching as a requirement. Guess what, a school will pass up a highly succesful candidate over an average teacher who can coach wrestling as an example. And lets take a guess at the percentage of athletes compared to the whole student body...........

RE: Since we are talking about schools-Sports ?.....
I see your issues. I use to be a varsity football coach , varsity track, and varsity basketball, and cutting kids is sad, but a reality of limited positions. In most cities, they have sports programs that are not related to UIL. They are usually optimis club leagues, church leagues, Pop warner, etc. etc.. I left the coaching because of the ludacrice demands made by jon Q public. Every one thinks the years their kids play should be a state champ year. I also quit because of the time demands. I have two daughters, and only got to see them on sunday at church. Other than that I was at the field house until late every night.
You are right about the predjudice some school districts place on coaching. In some schools I was not required to teach a class. If you have a successful record, some schools dont care if you can teach. I personally didnt care for that. I now run the science dept. of a school district, and have left the coaching thing behind me. I dont think Ill ever go back. I for one dont care for my kids to be taught by a coach, unless I personally know them. I know way to many coaches that blow off the class room because the court/field is the only thing they find important. I for one, was not like that. I take pride in teaching. To me, coaching was second to my teaching. I got lots of flack about that, but the way I saw it; if the kids didnt learn in class, how could i expect them to learn on the field. Lots of leasons carry over from class room to field, or visa-versa.
One last thougth. I blame a lot of the demise of UIL sports on both the coaches, win at all cost, mentality, as well as the fans ignorance.

Michael Jordan was cut in high school and it drove him (in part) to become the athelete he did.
Buckmine - the schools atheletics did not doom you, it was your parent/parents and lack of them helping you to achieve your goal. My parents did the same thing - they never went above and beyond to help me try out and play basketball. I went to college and played a bunch of pickup ball, some intramural games and stuff like that, but it didn't replace the lost opportunity of playing in high school.

How do they learn the life lessons of Disappointment , over coming adversity etc....
Some become gazzillionaires like Bill G others turn to shooting those"jocks".......
Come on, to give a kid an oppurtunity to stay out of trouble is worth the "lessons of disappointment". Disappointment can come from not making the "A" squad. Lesson, you don't make the team so don't ever try could lead to you don't get the job so don't look for one.
You should see the Australian culture, very rich from what I saw. At night I walked to get around. Around dusk very little traffic on the roads.
