Default Bush meets with Hunting/Shooting orgs again

April 12, 2004

TOURING THE PRESIDENT"S RANCH . . . Demonstrating a genuine knowledge of wildlife, habitat and the concerns of hunters and anglers, President George Bush led a group of sportsman organization leaders on a two-hour tour last Thursday of his 1,600-acre Crawford, Texas, ranch, pointing out pecan trees, native grasses, wild turkeys, bobwhite quail cover, wildflowers and a lake stocked with bass where he enjoys fishing accompanied by his Scottish terrier Barney. That the president shares the values of America "s hunters and anglers was clearly evident. Referring to himself as a conservationist, Bush said, "There"s a big difference between conservationists and preservationists. Conservationists care." NSSF President Doug Painter was among those invited on the first-of-its-kind tour. "President Bush is one of us"a hunter and fisherman who has first-hand experience scientifically managing his ranchland. He is aware of the concerns of outdoorsmen and women, particularly in regards to hunter access on public lands," said Painter, who attended a similar meeting at the White House four months ago. "The president is not a johnny-come-lately sportsman and clearly understands the importance of active management to ensure healthy wildlife populations," added Painter. In addition to NSSF, President Bush welcomed leaders from the National Rifle Association, Congressional Sportsmen"s Foundation, National Wild Turkey Federation, Safari Club International, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, U.S. Sportsmen"s Alliance , Ruffed Grouse Society, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, Boone & Crockett Club, BASS, American Sport Fishing Association and the Coastal Conservation Association

Good point, FFYG! I know that there is some questions about GW and the AWB, but he is way more FOR us than ANY Dummycrap would ever be! Even the few pro gun Democrats that are around, would change their stance to "anti-gun" if they get anywhere near the White House!

What about the rest of you guys? I thought this was a pro-hunting pro-gun board? Noone else has any comment?

I personally think this is good news for hunters. How many times did the previous administration meet with Ducks Unlimited or the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation?

Look this is not a knock on Bush and his being an outdoorsman, but does he, or did he ever hunt? I know he is not anti hunting and I know he fishs, but the last president I ever saw hunting while still in office was Carter. I am glad to hear he did this though, darn shame it didn't make the National news.

I am beginning to think that GW said he would sign the AWB to dodge some political heat around election time (heat from the lib. media), knowing that it was very unlikely that the legislation would make it to his desk. Just a hunch.

Etothepii, Then why would he say he agreed with it in his bid for the presidency in 2000?

I think this is great that he is meeting with the heads of these orgs.

Had he done it at all before this year?

I found pictures! Not much, but at least it shows Dubya with a shotgun and in some orange with some bird hunters.

I think most Americans agree with some sort of gun control (even though they're wrong) so, in the election bid, he was trying to show that he was in line with most Americans..."guns are your right, but there shoyuld be some limits"

Again...WRONG... but a safe thing to say when you're trying to get elected. Remember, I don't know squat...it's just an idea.

I have the belief that GW was, is, and will always be on the side of hunters and fishers. Nice to see good news once in a while Fight! Thanks.
