I thought I'd share this. On my recent spring turkey hunt to the Big Island I had a humorous if annoying experience with some TSA baggage screeners. My gun case & firearm went through fine. My other bag progressed until they found the box of 12ga shells, which I had declared.
I was then informed were 2 problems. First, I would need to show them my permit for the ammunition. Secondly, even with the correct permit, they couldn't let the shells through because the biggest shotgun shell they could allow was 8ga!
I asked the screener exactly what type of permit it was that I needed, and I pointed out to him the there is no permit requirement mentioned in that airline's contract of carriage. I then explained to him that for shotgun shells; the bigger the number, the smaller the gauge.(imagine how big a 410 would be according to their line of thinking)
While they took my word for it; I left wondering why they didn't know these things. If they screw up the obvious things, what are they not catching?

The simple root is extremely inadequate training, plain and simple. They really need to get their crap together is the domestic airline industry is going to survive. Guns owners are just the latest on a long list of people p*ssed off at the TSA.
