Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

I don't hesitate to write in a candidate if the mainstream ones don't suit my politics.

True story:

I recently heard the report on the Russian Election for president.

Russians can vote for "Non of the Above" or "Vote Against listed candidates" or however the translation works out.

I have often wished we could have this in America and have heard many on this board echo those thoughts as well.

I wish we had this option.
I have jokingly suggested that on here ,
so you're probably talking about me . [:-] You can write in "None of the above" , but your ballot won't get counted unless a substantial percentage of the other voters do it too .

We had that on a city ballot for a while then it just disappeared. I don't know why but I do write in " none of the above" and it does not invalidate the remainder of the ballot.

We have no good choice for mayor this next Tuesday in Milwaukee. Ones a flaming liberal and the other is a stupid bumbling liberal. I will write in the name of a candidate eliminated in the primary.

Last year our Alderman was sent to prison, we had a special election and my guy was not allowed to be on the ballot due to a typo on his papers. I was his fault but it was very nit-picky. He won the election as a write in candidate. Man were the other POed

My point is it does work.

The point is to protest the candidates on the ballot. Writing in a name is just what the 2 major parties want because the names will be so varied and incoherent and thus easily cast asside.
Um, writing in a candidate is a protest against the mainstream. What, do you think the ballot counters just toss out the ones with write-ins? They are all recorded very carefully.

Russians are allowed to do this, and, in more than a few cases, it has been the majority of a vote in some districts, mainly the ethno-republics and the satellite districts, such as those in the Caucasus. It has been primarily used by those who don't support the leftist parties that have, since the fall of communism, made a large comeback. The communist party apparatus, long since thought dead, has done surprisingly well in recent elections.
