MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- Officials have banned pink clothing for the remainder of the school year out of concerns that the color has become associated with gang activity.
Administrators last week told students at the city's high school and two middle schools to avoid wearing pink clothing or accessories, said Michael Berta, associate superintendent in the Northwestern Indiana district.
"There is no evidence of gang activity. But because of the growing use of the color pink we decided to be proactive. Girls and boys are supposed to avoid wearing pink," Berta said Monday.
None of the district's 6,500 students have been disciplined for wearing pink, he said.
Berta said the issue came up at a recent administrator's meeting when a principal remarked that there were more students wearing pink. "Not only were there more kids wearing pink T-shirts and pink hats, but also pink shoelaces, which was unusual," he said.
Clothing retailers said pink is a popular color in current styles.
"About 30 percent of my items for this season are pink. It's 'in.' I have pink in every shade," said Amanda Zipko, owner of Amanda Gayle's boutique in Schererville.

This crap has just gotten ridiculous. A couple months ago, my daughter's K-8 school banned these little jelly-bracelets that the girls were wearing, my daughter included, because some administrator had read that somewhere on the east coast they were being worn to send messages about sexual activity. They called an assembly and told the kids the bracelets were no longer allowed. None of the kids even knew what the teachers were talking about!

You nailed that quote before I had a chance to, and you're absolutely right. School officials have always been among the first to go off the deep end in reaction to the "potential" for "inappropriate behavior", whether it's occuring in their school or another one 3,000 miles away.
They forget that the vast majority of kids are just that--kids! When people talk about America's youth losing their innocence, my first thought is that these kinds of reactionaries are the ones who took it away in the first place!
As a footnote, what kind of gang wears pink?! I don't claim to be an expect on gang crime, but come on!
I have clean my closets of all pink clothes so that I won't be caught up in any gang activity, although I didn't have any anyway

I have a very low regard for public schools in general, but that is besides the point. We "VOTE" school board officials into their positions in an attempt to do what is right for our children.
I have no idea how "pink" stuff could be construed to be "gang" related, but this is obviously a situation in this particular district, or it would not have been brought up in the first place.
I hesitate to comment on what one district did or did'nt do to further the education of their local kids, but this is probably a case of some mundane, "problem solved" thing that has been brought to the national level courtesy of the internet.
I expect that it is a "non-issue" in the town where this is happening, and only an issue to "us" everywhere else.
