Default Gas Prices

For all of you that have said the price of gas is going to hurt GW , here is what happens if Kerry gets elected :

If Kerry's gas tax increase were law -- the average family would pay $657 more a year. Raising taxes is a habit of Kerry's -- he supported gasoline taxes 11 times. Maybe John Kerry just doesn't understand what his ideas mean to the rest of us."

I just read an interesting post over at fark.com that made me think of this thread. With apologies to olddinosaur:

Quote:
When I first paid for gasoline in 1970, the cheapest I could buy was 21.9 cents a gallon. Gold at the time was $58 an ounce, so in absolute money, 1 ounce of gold is 265 gallons of gasoline.

Gold closed at $418 today, so in absolute money terms, a gallon of gasoline should cost $1.578 per gallon.

I filled up this morning at $1.569, which should end the story---but it does not.

When I worked in 1970, I was paid minimum wage as a general flunky, running errands for the Cadillac dealer; my salary was $1.50 an hour, and out of $60 gross, I took home $48.13.

Today it would take a minimum wage of $10.81 an hour to equal what I made 34 years ago, but in all actuality it would have to be higher because taxes have gone up.

When you see these prices, the gasoline isn't dearer--the Dollar is smaller. In real terms, the prices don't matter at all; it's what you have to do to get the money that matters.

i work in an H2S (hydrogen sulfide) gas plant

we strip the H2S out of the gas and reinject it into the ground

1st problem it is very leathal +or- 800 PPM(one breath your dead)
2nd it dont burn well
3rd the exhaust of burning it is SO2 which is extremely leathal

all in all not a good idea

H2S is a by-product of natural gas

No, I don't think you'd want to burn hydrogen sulfide gas. Hydrogen molecules would combine with oxygen in the combustion process giving you the power to move your pistons and propel your vehicle alright. However, the byproducts would be water (no big deal) and sulfur (bigger deal)! Some of the sulfur would combine with water vapor to create either sulfuric or sulfurous acid. Both are very bad for you to breath (for any length of time, deadly). They also will eat through many engine and exhaust parts made out of metal.

I think there are other gases we should take a closer look at using though. Hydrogen from electrolysis might be a possibility in some cases. I saw a story once about an old farmer in Iowa who built his own electrolysis machine powered by a small wind machine, compressed the hydrogen and stored it in pressure tanks. He ran his tractors and a truck I think off of it that he'd put conversion kits on. Interesting anyway.

Also, how about if these big hog, chicken, turkey and cattle operations putting the waste into digesters to create a type of natural gas to sell or use for a variety of energy applications? The technology is not very complicated from what I've read in either Popular Science or Mechanics. It's used in a number of less developed countries on small scale even to use for heating and cooking.

If the higher prices get some inventive minds working overtime and make other renewable sources more economical, they may be a blessing in disguise!

Dependency on foreign oil is the problem. Alaska wants us to drill on that non-vegatated ice block but the environmental wacko's in Washington are making it a politacal issue. Just start drilling and those OPEC towel heads will drop there prices.

The gas stations across from the refinery would be confused when i asked them about transportion costs.
But they closed them down( not enough profits/oil here?)lotsa gas/coal- but they gave the dump to the city/avoided the epa/anylawsuits. It will soon be a big lovely green golf course right on the river.

(hopely the ground wont catch on fire [] - nahh it looks nice & they water it a lot.
