Default Let your wife have a gun?

Maybe an odd question, but would like to find out what you all think.

I was chatting with my wife this morning about this subject. I went to a client dinner function last night and didn't get home until about 1am. As my wife sat home alone, she saw a report on the news about a string of home invasions in a community only a half hour south of us where women were home alone and wound up getting raped. This isn't a "bad" town either - you may have heard of the school that is there - UofM. I have my hunting rifles and shotguns in the house, but my 9 is at my parents, (we recently moved and still haven't got all of our life under one roof). This concerns me as it does my wife - not having a way to protect herself when I'm not there. My wife does not own a pistol, nor does she really know how to use one. We have been talking for years about getting her a pistol she could easily handle, taking some self-defense and shooting courses together, and getting our CCWs. For a hundred different reasons, we haven't done that yet. It is our goal to have these things wrapped up by mid summer. How about you? Does your wife know how to use a gun? Have their own pistol? CCW? See anything wrong with this? (Sorry ladies, I addressed this to the guys out here, but I'm sure it can be answered the other way around too.)

There is no circumstance in which I would want my wife not to have a gun. Women need to be able to protect themselves as much as men do, if not more! My wife is quite proficient with my Walther P1 and Steyr M40, and I have the 870 right there next to it in the safe.

Whether I'm there or not, she knows what to do if someone tries to break in or attack her. Both of us are getting our CCWs this summer.

By the way, I'm getting her a SIG P239 .40S&W as a gift for her CCW.

I don't have a wife, but I have always taught my gf's (longer term anyway) how to handle my handguns and rifles. Only one of them has ever had any experience with them and the others have always at first not really wanted anything to do with them until I took the time to teach them proper respect and handling/shooting skills.

On the plus side it has always made it easier to go out shooting when I wanted to, the negative side is I have to be extra nice to make sure they won't cap my @ss

I don't think I would ever use the term "let" regarding Mrs. Charley and anything she wanted to do!
That said, Mrs. Charley doesn't view guns like I do. To me, they are often toys, and something to experiment and play with. To her, they are a tool, pure and simple. We both have CHLs, and both carry almost everyday, depending on the circumstances. She has found what handguns she likes, and is comfortable with. Took some experimenting, and some swapping, but she now has a Makarov in 9x18 for a house gun. I've installed a set on Novak sights on it, and she is an excellant shot. For concealed carry, she prefers a Kel-Tec in .32 ACP. She also can shoot all my handguns, but doesn't really like 1911 style guns. Handgun recoil doesn't bother her at all, but she hates shotguns, and won't consider using one as a defense gun.

I have a Taurus .357mag and a Ruger .22. The .22 is just for plunking and bunnies, but I always have the .357 with me when I'm up in the hills. When I practice with it though, I use .38s. Otherwise, my hand can get sore pretty fast!

My girlfriend and I live together (we are still in college), and she can completely tear down, put together, clean, and shoot all of my pistols and my remington 870 express. She will get her CCW when she is 21, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Even if the chance of something happening is 1 in 100,000,000, would you take that chance with her? I choose not to.
