Just watched ESPN and Messier was suspended for spearing another player and Belak tried to take the goalies head off with his stick, missed and whacked another player - much more brutal than what Bertuzzi did, however the result wasn't as serious.

Ya'll with me on this, right ? Life ban from the NFL for both these guys their careers ended, no NHL hall of fame, assult chanrges filed ... the whole shebang ... right ?

For the amount of $$$ these guys make there should only be a cage-event sentence...Where the guy who was tresspassed against is allowed lots of free shots on the guy who did the original tresspassing. In the case where the victim is unable to pass out the punishment it should go to another player on the team selected by popular vote of the league. That oughta settle things down......dontcha think?

Would it be too much to ask of professional athletes to just simply follow the rules of their respective sports ?

Bad behavior is endemic to every pro sport these days , and it's bringing down the quality of the experience for the fan . If these pampered overpaid jocks want to fight so badly then perhaps we should bring back gladiatorial games so that they'll have an appropriate forum to do so . This would at least weed out the wannabes .

Pro sports(oxymoron?) disgust me so much anymore that I don't watch any of them .

They'll all be locked out either before or after the playoffs and wont be back as the same NHL as we know today. The fights etc are getting out of control ....a hockey stick is a deadly weapon correct ? He almost took that guys head off ...........

Come on ... ya'll were calling for a life ban and assault charges for Bertuzzi, I expect ya'll to also be calling for the very same consequences for these two guys, right ?

NY Bowhunter - If Bertuzzi is guilty of assault, Belak is guilty of attempted murder. From what I saw, he swung at the goalie and hit another guy, and I mean a roundhouse swing with a hockey stick, from a 240 pound, 6'3" fellow.

Ban him, right ? Or was that another "unwritten" part of the game ?

But you know, ya'll said it wasn't the result that was the complaint but the action. Punching a guy in the face is far less serious than hitting a man in the face with a round house swining hocky stick.

I would say if the roundhouse swing of the stick at someones head was intentional then absolutely toss him!!!
The fact is it wasn't intentional. It has been discussed and looked at a zillion times. You know the feeling when you're losing your balance? You start swinging your arms wildly to try to catch yourself. You try to counterbalance your weight somehow? Do you look at who's next to you to see if you may hit them in the jaw or do you instinctively swing your arms? Now try gaining your balance standing on a half inch blade.
There was no malice or intent involved. He reacted to falling that's all.
