Litter - Is it as bad in your locale as it is here?
I think we have more than our fair share of slobs in SC. There is litter everywhere. Even the little rock road that goes by my house has beer cans and drink bottles along the ditches all of the time. I've picked them up and picked them up, only to find more. I seriously don't know what I might do if I catch them, but it won't be pretty.
What in the hell is so hard about putting your trash in a trash can?
RE: Litter - Is it as bad in your locale as it is here?
My two biggest pet-peeves about littering? 1. People who toss cigarette butts, or empty their whole ashtray out the window. 2. Remember that Indian crying commercial that used to be on all the time? Ever drive through a reservation? The couple that I've been through have garbage up to your knees in both ditches.

Oh man, don't even get me started on cigarette butts. I have to pick them up in my yard all the time after every get together. I hate everything to do with a cigarette.
That is sad about the Indian reservations.
Don't these people care about the world they are leaving for their kids???
They should play those anti littering commercials every day.

Stickemup ,
my area has the Adopt-a-highway program where local groups and the county jail inmates pick up roadside litter . Perhaps a word to your county commisioners about this program would help .

We have that here to....its really needed after winter( a lot of ppls trash gets blown around from all the winter winds- barb wire fences full of it... They do have a $750.00 littering fine here- still ppl litter some( to much).
But worse then that to me is the idiots i see thowing lit cigg butts out there car/truck windows ,during the dry season-& thats most of the yr.
I guess if...they catch them they can make them pay for the fire suppresion o& damaged lands& property& lives etc..if. Never heard of it. Only when arson as at play...i see it as not much diffent.

We have the Adopt-A-Highway program. It's great. All sorts of organizations want to do good deeds for their communities. And once your name gets up on that sign, there's no way you're going to let "your" highway be littered up!
The sections of highway that aren't adopted and the secondary roads around here, unfortunately, are terrible. I've never understood why people want to do that.
I was paddling the whitewater of the Big South Fork here in TN over the weekend and some guys in front of us kept a trash bag to put their trash in (kudos to them! Many people just throw their soda cans and Marlboro packs to the side. There's nothing worse than a trashed up protected wilderness area). At the end of the trip, as they were unloading their canoes, they took the bag of trash and placed it carefully on the river bank... and left. What the heck??

That's just the thing. We do have this program statewide as well as a ton of volunteer organizations that are seen picking up trash all the time. My cousin and I do it around our area all the time, but it's just too much of it. We simply can't keep up with the slobs. The only way to have clean roadways is to stop throwing it out the window.
We supposedly have huge fines for littering, but I have yet to hear of anyone actually having to PAY any fines.
It is frustrating to say the least.
I'm beginning to think we should have a crime lab that does nothing but pick up cans and bottles on roadways and lift fingerprints off of them so they can nail the sorry POS that threw it out.
RE: Litter - Is it as bad in your locale as it is here?
Littering's always been a problem where I've lived, but it's beginning to get worse every month. I've always seen people throw their cigarette butts out the window (boy did I give my wife an earful when she used to do that), so that's pretty commonplace. But actual garbage is becoming a big problem.
I'll just say that my town seems to be filling up rather quickly with people who either don't have the social values that my neighbors and I have, or they simple can't afford/don't want to pay for garbage removal. I'm really getting sick seeing of trash bags, broken furniture, stained carpeting, and empty cases of Corona along the shoulders.
Oh, I almost forgot. Today I saw my first discarded gallon of urine along the beltway. I heard about some areas in the Northwest having that problem, but now I should probably expect to see more of the same in my area.

I have seen those ppl here too, thow whole bags etc on the highway/ roads etc![:@]
I know if you travel south( the drection here on a sunny day in summer you will be blinded by the brokken bottles along the road that have acumalated in the past 50 yrs or so...not a store within 50 miles or more either someplaces.
They where going to stick up some big life size copper buffalos once, that swung in the wind for the tourists& drivers etc. about $11,000 each? Maybe they remembered all the road signs with holes in them.
Trashs cans would be handy- even with holes in them.
RE: Litter - Is it as bad in your locale as it is here?
I grew up in south Alabama, and I know what ya'll are talking about trash being all over the side of the road. I moved to Colorado about ten years ago and people don't seem to litter out here nearly as much as they do in the south. When my dad came to visit the first time he was amazed by the lack of trash on the roads.
Another thing you rarely see out here are the prisoners on the side of the road picking up the trash. I guess because there is none?
Just my 2 cents.
