Alabama Man Gets Home Detention, Fine for Having Machine Gun
Alabama Man Gets Home Detention, Fine for Having Machine Gun
3/16/2004
A Florence, Ala., man was fined $10,000 and will spend nine months in home detention for possessing a World War II-era machine gun, the Associated Press reported March 12.
Federal law prohibits the private possession of machine guns.
U.S. District Judge Karen O. Bowdre also ordered Paul David Connolly, 49, to perform 150 hours of community service and placed him on five years' probation.
Connolly said he assembled the Sten gun from a kit and planned to use it for recreational purposes only.
Under the law, Connolly could have faced a 10-year sentence. U.S. Attorney Alice Martin plans to review the sentence.

He probably bragged to a friend or coworker and was overheard by someone else. But you're right about being watched. I'm sure that the BATFE will investigate "tips" from citizens like that fairly quickly, and there are bound to be quite a few of them. With all the media hype we get of snipers and bombers and terrorists, people freak out easily.
I wonder if he believes it was worth it all? I want the Feds to obey the Bill of Rights literally, but pressing the issue isn't worth losing my freedom at this point. I certainly don't need a machine gun to have fun at the range or in the woods. Besides, he could've registered it with and paid the tax to the BATFE.

No it doesn't. All he had to do was apply for and purchase a class 3 permit and he would have been legal.

Typical poor research practices by the media. You just need to pass the BATFE background check, get your local Sheriff/Police Chief to sign the form, and pay $200, right?
RE: Alabama Man Gets Home Detention, Fine for Having Machine Gun
I think that's pretty much it. There may be more specifics to it depending on the state and such. I don't know all of the specifics cause I don't have anywhere the ammount of money it would take to purchase a fully auto gun and then supply the ammo for it to eat. So I have never really looked into it all that deeply. I'll find out though.
jjt, You can look on the internet gun sales sites and you can purchase them there. Be fore warned though. You will spend $5,000 on up to, well....... limitless per gun. There are a couple of class 3 dealers here in the Denver area that I could get you names of if you want.

Correct on both counts!! $200.00 per gun! It is the MG that is registered, and it's $200.00 registration fee for each one..... And we all know how well (if at all) the media researches anything....
