Yes, it was written in 1892 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World.
I have no problem with the patriotic wording of the Pledge, because I do take America and the liberty she provides very seriously. But how is a good, honest, freedom-loving non-Christian supposed to say it and not feel like a hypocrite because of the "under God"? Let people worship God on their own, not while honoring our country.
