First, it was a Lie. The pledge was written in the late 1800's and the "Under God" part was added in the 1950's as a poilitical slap at the Soviet's atheist doctrine - cold war politics.

Yes, it was written in 1892 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World.

I have no problem with the patriotic wording of the Pledge, because I do take America and the liberty she provides very seriously. But how is a good, honest, freedom-loving non-Christian supposed to say it and not feel like a hypocrite because of the "under God"? Let people worship God on their own, not while honoring our country.

First off this country was founded by people seeking Religious freedom. That is ths whole reason that people settled in the new world to begin with. The founding fathers wanted us to have freedom to choose many things, our religon is one among many.

There are too many people trying to use religion in some shape or form as a way to get their way. That as I see it is the greatest wrong.

icthruu, The reason that is happening is because our country has become increasingly more centralized in gov't... increasing federal power, and citizens are fighting for that power. Currently on issues... someone wins, someone loses. Some philosophy is going to rule.

We were to be sovereign states.

I'm too tired to discuss it at length. I think you know what I mean. Freedom as we once knew it has been lost... I believe never to return.

1776 hasn't been that long ago. So much has changed...
