A. Informs the prospective customer that thier present product is a piece of garbage and that they were wrong for buying it, because the salesmans product is perfect! He insults the reasons the customer feels that thier present product is right for them, he tells them that all thier present product will cause them great harm and that thiers is the only one that will do the job! He refuses to even acknowledge any reason the customer gives for selecting their present product. Basically in a nut shell he makes sure that the customer knows that he is right and they are wrong! If the customer does not buy thier product he informs them they are fools and leaves!
B. Informs the customer of his product in a friendly manner, he never insults the customer for thier present product or the reasons they have chosen it. He tells them he understands why they may feel that way and politely explains the benefits of thier product. If the customer says no thank you, he thanks them for their time and tells them that if they ever think of changing to his product or if they have more questions about his product to please call him and then he thanks them for thier time.
Two questions about the 2 above examples.
1. Which salesmen would you be more likely to buy from and why?
2. Which salesman would you contact if you were looking to change your present product and why?

Depends on if there was any truth to what salesman #1 was spewing. I'd have to research it further and see what product was best fit for the price. Customer service helps, but when it comes down to it I want the best product for the money i'm paying. It doesn't matter to me if the saleperson sugar coats it and makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. If I was an idiot for purchasing my current product, then I'd like someone educated about it to tell me i'm an idiot so I can learn from it and spend my money wisely in the future.

Again it depends on how the product worked out for me. If I have a good history and no complaints about the product and feel I have the best product for my buck, then I'll continue to purchase that product from that salesman. I'm paying for a product, not to have some yo yo whisper sweet nothings in my ear.

I believe that a good, sound product will sell itself.
I like to be able to either look in a catalog, store shelves or the internet and make a decision based upon my needs and price range for whatever it is I'm looking for. Then, once I find a good product...I tend to stick with it.
I usually have two or three folks coming around every week trying to sell me stuff that I not only don't want but don't need.
I think like you Dave, but what about a product that you HAVE to buy through a salesman? Like a truck for example. I guess you could order one on line, but you would still have to deal with the a sales guy for delivery. I like to think that I know what I want and don't really like being "sold" too much at all. I bought a new truck last fall - went to the Chevy and GMC dealers. I've driven plenty of GM products so I know what's out there. I chose the GMC because the Chevy sales guy and his sales manager hounded me relentlessly calling. I had to tell them three times that I bought a GMC. They didn't even believe me. The GMC sales guy was awesome - didn't sell me a thing because he recognized I'd been around the block a few times.

Well if the sales person is a demmocrap, and I think that is where you're going, they are neither good at what they are trying to sell or at servicing the product they do sell. They don't sell their product they tear down the other guy take your money, spend it and tell you you need to give them more to make the product work better. They tell you, you should feel good about giving them your money because the know wahts best for you and feel your pain.
As far as, are they going about it in the right way? No, they are going about it in the only way that will work for them. We will know which method works best come this November. I thing that the old circus carnival saying, there is a fool born every minute is the backbone of their sales pitch.
