Smile ... within the last hour, thanks to your help, we achieved a HUGE victory. By a vote of 52 to 47, the Senate passed a renewal of the Assault Weapons Ban. Senators also agreed, 53 to 46, to close the notorious "gun show loophole" that made it possible for criminals to buy firearms at gun shows without background checks.
You made this victory possible with your financial contributions, e-mails and calls. You contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars. You sent over 125,000 e-mails to the U.S. Senate. You made thousands of phone calls urging Senators to make the right decision: to stand up for police by keeping the ban on assault weapons and ending the dangerous gun show loophole. And that's what they did.
What's next? Today we shattered the conventional wisdom and showed that the NRA can lose and lose big. We showed that the NRA is not on the side of police, not on the side of the Senate and not on the side of the American public. Now we can build on this victory. We have the momentum and will continue to fight and fight hard.
We're going to get back to you soon with a substantive update about what our next steps will be. But for now, we wanted to express our thanks for your outstanding efforts over the past week. Go celebrate with your loved ones and toast the victory.
