My wife and I run a day care facilty. We have just been informed of new regulations effective April 1 of this year. No longer will we be able to administer over the counter or prescription medications to any child until we have completed medication Adminstration Training. Even with written permission from their parents.
However a doctor can perform an abortion on a minor with out parental approval.
If I give a kid that's teething some Tylenol our license will be revoked, but if one of the kids we watch after school gets pregnant I can take her to get an abortion and not inform the parents.

Here another thing that kills me. We have to have advanced first aid and CPR before we can take the MAT class. We were already planning on taking these courses, but they aren't available until after the April 1 deadline. So if a kid needs medications until we get certified the parents are supposed to come from work to do it.
They only gave 6 weeks notice to all the day care providers in NYS and didn't have enough classes scheduled to implement the program.

This is what we get when we mix socialism with medicine, and politics with parenting! We'll be lucky to survive out the century as a society....and a national entity!

And they wonder why there is such a problem with single parents being able to afford decent child care.
Exactly what kind of training do they give you regarding administering tylenol? Do they teach you how to read parents or doctors instructions? What exactly is this supose to resolve?
Only thing I can think of is awareness of certain medications causing bad reactions if mixed together or something like that.
They should give you at least until after you can take the CPR class so the parents and kids lives won't be possibly effected.

Yep, this is a hare-brained law. Regarding contra-indication of medicines--isn't it the doctor's (and even pharmacist's) responsibility to prevent this in the first place? Until daycare providers are expected to go to medical school and become certified physicians, they really don't have any responsibility except simply following the instructions given by the doctor.

I called and explained who is was to the person on the phone. He say's "you watch my niece" I just started laughing. Explained to this man that it was stupid to implemant a program until you have trained the people that are going to teach the MAT class.

Aught six, I agree. This is certainly one of those assanine regulations that only causes a lot of headache for parents and daycare facilites alike. And you are absolutly correct in that daycare workers should be in no way held responsible for administering prescription drugs. That's simply the only reasoning, not that I agree with it at all, that I could see in a regulation like this.
What happens to a child that is maybe diabetic or asthmatic and needs to have insulin or asthma medication given daily or multiple times daily and all of a sudden these day care facilites can no longer legally administer this medication with out being arrested or shut down. Is the family simply sh#$ ou of luck? Do they have to stay home and not work? Will they be forced to send their child to day care anyway risking hospitalization or death of their child because they are single and if they don't work then the family doesn't eat?

Excellent point--I'm a juvenile diabetic myself. I was "fortunate" enough to be 14 when it hit me, so I never had a problem like the one you've illustrated. But still, the potential for disaster is there. A diabetic toddler or even pre-schooler cannot be trusted to administer insulin or glucose without direct adult supervision!
