Marriage is a state issue. When's the last time the federal government issued a marriage license? We've got more important things to think about in Washington rather than amending the Constitution over something like this.

The Federal Constitution affects all states since Federal law always supercedes state law . With an ammendment to the Federal version it would be much harder for the *****s and libby judges to overturn it . If the states were to do it in their usual hodgepodge manner then they could easily have them thrown out since the FC wouldn't cover the issue .

As far as I'm concerned the dissenting quarter of states (in your example) would have every right to allow gay marriages. States like California are already more than halfway to homo-hippydom, so let them go their own way.
The bottom line is that we are the United States. Things are backwards when the feds force their will on individual states, as is the norm in our modern era. States should bond together for the good of the nation (national infrastructure, national defense, etc.), but leave civil issues to one another.
First of all, this amendment has absolutely NO chance of passing.
Second, all this amendment would do is define marriage as one man and one women at the federal level. All civil unions will be left up to the states to decide, and the full faith and credit clause of the US Constitution would not be used to force all states to recognize civil unions from another state.

Yes, it's a real shame, federal law. The Bill of Rights was just fine without having to make amendments over this and that over the past 200 years.
I have lost count at how many times I have heard from many people on this forum that the government should stay out of "societys" bussiness. What makes this any different? Because you don't approve of it. Lets not be hypocritical here.
Now, do I approve of gy marriges? I dont' know. I believe in the traditional "family" unit but I also believe in equality for homosexuals. They pay taxes like everyone else. So, right now, I just don't know.
