Default What was this "Dad" thinking?

Girl spanked in front of classmates at high school in Wisconsin

Associated Press

Published February 24, 2004

CUDAHY, Wis. -- The Cudahy School District has changed its visitation policy for parents after a father spanked his daughter in front of other students in her high school biology class.

"The students were horrified,'' James P. Heiden, the district's director of student services, said of the incident. "It took everybody by complete surprise.''

Both Cudahy police and the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare have reviewed the case at the school district's request, and neither found basis for child abuse or neglect.

"Obviously it's unusual to have a girl spanked in front of the class, it's highly unusual, but not a police matter, not at this time from the information we received,'' said Cudahy police Sgt. Randy Scheel.

Heiden said the district visitation policy now calls for parents to meet with students only in the office, not a classroom.

The girl's mother, contacted at home Monday evening, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel her daughter "comes from a very loving family. There's nothing to be concerned about.''

She described the spanking as a misjudgment for which the family apologized to the school. Police said they had no record of prior contact with anyone in the family.

School officials said the girl had disrupted her biology class Feb. 11, leading assistant principal Greg DePue to notify her father when he was at school the next day addressing a situation with another child.

DePue said the father entered the classroom, called his daughter to the front and told her he would not have her disrupting class. He then told the girl to turn around, and spanked her on her bottom, the assistant principal said.

"It was so fast,'' DePue said. "It just happened.''

I bet that girl doesn't ever disrupt her biology class again.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with this, and I guarentee that Cal is right that she never disrupts her biology class again.

Would i do it, no, but who knows what the whole story is here. Sounds like a parent parenting to me

The way that many kids today act in and out of school I applaud this guy. I know that I would have been on my best behavior after that and I bet that she is too.

Maybe if the school would bring back the good old fashoned paddle and take care of school matters at school and inform the parents that the matter had been taken care of then the dad wouldn't have seen the need to come to the school himself. She could have gotten another one when she got home like I (we) did.

I know that my but was stung a couple of times in school and I turned out alright.[8D] I don't have any nightmares of a wooden paddle coming to take me away.[]

Yeah, I'm sure they were horrified. I bet they were laughing their arses off. I know I would have been.

A big part of the problem in society today. If more kids were horrified like this more often, they would still possess a trait called RESPECT. IMHO, the lack of "spankings" as a tool of discipline is one of the contributing factors to a lack of respect for the law. If kids have no fear of the parents, why should they fear the law or laws. They have no concept of consequence.

My hat is off to the man! When I was in school the first day of school I had to carry a note to school giving my teacher permission to spank me and return it to my parents signed by my teacher or my rear end got tore up!!

Well I am not a drug addict, I have no police record, and I consider myself successful in life!

I am not sure I would spank one of my kids in front of the whole class, but they do get spanked when needed, I was raised by the old saying "Spare the rod and spoil the child"! If more parents would start really discipling their children instead of the "Time Out" BS or the "No no Johnny that is not the right way to behave" caca, we would see a whole lot more respect out of the youth of today!

Amen to that, I grew up in a real small town where everyone knew just about everyone. I acted up on the school bus one time and my father took me to the bus drivers house and whipped me in front of her, you think I ever did it again, not a chance. Most kids today don't know what discipline is and a lot of them have no respect for adults not even their parents, I mean time-out we would have laughted at that when I was a kid. I'm not saying that we should whip our kids for everything but if what this child did was bad enough to call her parents to the school then she probably deserved what she got.

I would like to know if the students were more.......or less.......horrified than the students at Columbine?!?

I grew up in a time when yes......meant yes, and no.....meant no! And those times when I had trouble distinguishing.....it was pointed out to me...on my butt cheeks. Both in school....and at home! And to this day I have no difficulty understanding consequences concerning inappropriate behavior.

Not only did I grow up in a loving environment, but I grew up in a disciplined environment! They are NOT mutually exclusive.....as some would like to think!

Dave

Note: And I am willing to confess I do not have enough information concerning the above incident to make any other judgement statements. Either about the girl....or her family life. But a spanking does not make either a good......or a bad parent. (It is the context in which discipline is used!)

hntngirl - I'll bust my little girls butt when I think its neccessary and if you or anyone else is offended LEAVE. My family situation is MINE, not yours, not anyone elses.

I have a personal responsibility to raise my kids the way I see fit to - and if that includes busting a bottom then thats exactly what I'll do. You nor anyone else has any rights or say so in the matter.
