I have a master's in Electrical Engineering and I can't stand the field. I'm either going to kill myself or someone else.
How about just bolting blind... other than that I haven't a damn clue.
guilt about not making it further, guilt about not "breaking down the iron triangle" at work, guilt about trying to step down.
It's not that i've worked that hard, it's that i don't apparently (and never did) fit the "corporate mold".... I out thought, out "graded" and out worked many of these idiots.. but I just can't take this crap any more.
I'm thinking about talking to a buddy of mine and sand blasting ore carriers on L. Michigan for the remainder and during the summer running the kettle on their tar truck - until i figure something out.
You're not a loser at all. I've been in the wonderful world of advertising for 15 years now and I still hate it. Deciding what to do for a living isn't an easy thing, even after you already have started working for a living doing what you don't know you want to do. I actually have no good advice except hang in there. Working on the ships sounds cool. Maybe that'll lead to a great job in which you can apply your area of expertise. One way I look at my college education - it prepared me to go out and start learning.

Start your own consulting business and charge people out the yang for your expertise.
I know what you mean though - I'm non my 8th company and still haven't managed to get the 401(k) above about a buck fifty. I think my wife and I are going to sell everything, move away from the expensive area, and own a free-range farm (selling chickens and eggs and turkeys), and board horses.

I agree with Badshotbob. Consult.
We have a consultant (electircal engineer) come in to calibrate our instruments twice per year- he charges beaucoup $$$'s. Doesn't seem to be bad to be self employed if you can afford the health insurance.

I have notice that you have not been your usuall jovial self since sometime around November.
The world is full of examples of folks who quit doing what they spent years learning how to do, only to go on and be successfull in some strange and bizare new occupation.
Doctors who quit doctoring only to become hardware store owners,
Lawyers who quit lawyering only to go on to write best selling books,
Engineers who run mega sized landscaping companies.
I don't think you are a looser, in-as-much as you either need a really good vacation or a change of lifestyle.
The real question is; what are you gonna do about it....Do you really want a change, or does it make you feel good to complain.
If you really want a change in lifestyle, then the world,,,as they say,,,is your oyster.
A. you're not a loser. You have a masters degree in a pretty tough field. You have a steady job that's probably decent paying whether you like it or not.
B. If you're that passionate about your field, you either need to find a different avenue within your experise that will give you some freedom and make you happy, or you need to have a serious life changing moment and find something else.
Being happy in what you do for a living is huge in your life. It obviously affects all aspects of your life. If you're not happy with what you do and you not being happy with what you do is making the rest of your life miserable, then what's the sense. Find a balance if you can. If you can find something within your field that you can cope with and enjoy, then that's great. If not, you couldn't pay me enough to go to work someplace everyday where I felt like killing someone. Nope.

My best friend is an EE in Detroit (auto industry). He's on his second job. First one sucked, he quit. Current on sucked hard at first. Killing himself was probably a real thought for a while... But it got better. The job is up and down right now, but on the balance, he is happy.
I currently work with a guy who has a masters in EE. We are teachers in a vocational school. I'm in math, he teaches industrial electricity. Teaching is an option. If you can't stand highschoolers, or the thought of working in a public school, think about the college level. A masters is enough for community, or smaller colleges.
Or...you could make cable descramblers and sell them on the internet...
