I have purchased lots of ammunition at Walmart and have never been asked for ID. I was in line behind a younger guy at Walmart about an hour ago. He was buying a Bonus pack of 100 12gauge shells. We've all seen them there. The cashier asked him for ID because he looked a little young, but then when he gave it to her she typed something into the screen, probably his drivers license number. Is this a usual practice at Walmart?

Yeah I have been asked for ID before at W-mart and actually worked in the sporting goods dept. while in high school. They don't sell ammo to persons under 18 years old nor do they sell hand gun ammo to persons under 21 years old. What they type in is the persons birthday to cover their arses just in case thae buyer gets into trouble with the ammo so they can proove that they checked their birthday.

I've been asked at walmart whether the .22 LR ammo I'm buying is for a handgun or rifle.
I think its an odd question, because someone who is 18 could easily lie.

Wow, that's one of the 3 big lies right after:
1. The check is in the mail
2. *******************
reloading makes cheaper ammo. Having cheaper ammo makes you shoot more. Shooting more means more relaoding. Reloading more means you start to rationalize your expensive hobby to allow you to shoot more.[:-]
I probably spend well over $1000 a year on reloading supplies, whereas 10 years ago, I might have spent $20 on a box of hunting ammo per year.

Our local Wally World has a the same policy with the ammo and also you have to be 16 to buy a BB gun and 18 to buy anything in a spray can, paint etc. or a tube of glue. Cuts down on huffing, they say.
If you're 18-20, and you're buying 22 rounds, tell them it's for a rifle...otherwise you have to wait til your 21 to buy them...since the 22 pistol and the 22 rifle don't shoot the same rounds???
Some of the crap these companies do is completely gay...
