Scholarship created for Whites Only....what do you think?
BRISTOL, R.I. "” A student group at Roger Williams University (search) is offering a new scholarship for which only white students are eligible, a move they say is designed to protest affirmative action (search).
The application for the $250 award requires an essay on "why you are proud of your white heritage" and a recent picture to "confirm whiteness."
"Evidence of bleaching will disqualify applicants," says the application, issued by the university's College Republicans.
Jason Mattera, 20, who is president of the College Republicans, said the group is parodying minority scholarships.
"We think that if you want to treat someone according to character and how well they achieve academically, then skin color shouldn't really be an option," he said. "Many people think that coming from a white background you're automatically privileged, you're automatically rich and your parents pay full tuition. That's just not the case."
The stunt has angered some at the university, but the administration is staying out of the fray. The school's provost said it is a student group's initiative and is not endorsed by Roger Williams (search).
Mattera, who is of Puerto Rican descent, is himself a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship open only to a minority group.
"No matter what my ethnicity is, I'm making a statement that scholarships should be given out based on merit and need," Mattera told the Providence Journal.
His group took out a full-page ad in last week's issue of the university's student newspaper to tout the scholarship, which was for $50 until two donors came forward to add $100 each during the weekend, Mattera said.
It's not the first brush with controversy for the group. The school temporarily froze the Republicans' money in the fall during a fight over a series of articles published in its monthly newsletter. One article alleged that a gay-rights group indoctrinates students into homosexual sex.

VC, I agree it's stupid.......it's just as stupid as the fact we have a black only scholarships. What this "prank" does is make people look at their own beliefs and politics. It is easy to say that you fully support black scholarships, affirmative action, and black history month. But if such things are racist then how can white only scholarships and male history month not be ok?
Let me put it this way....yes it's radical and silly. That's the entire point. I don't think that any of these students really want a white only scholarship.

Yes there's a difference. The difference is that you can change what you don't like in America if the change has merit and you go through the appropriate steps. Divisiveness and grandstanding get you attention...the wrong kind.
If they or you or I don't like the way The United ***** College Fund goes about its business, you can make your voice be heard without burning down their headquarters or insulting them publicly.

I agree to point VC. I fully understand what you are getting at.
I have to disagree that asking for the same rights and privliges that these people do compares with "burning down their headquarters or insulting them publicly". I think you are calling someone out on the carpet and make them look inward at their own beliefs. Again I know what you are getting at but I disagree. I guess I just wish this point didn't have to be made at all.
Oh and the real problem is, you and I nor anyone else will ever change these policies by any means. These things will only get worse because you and I and everyone else are going to sit on our thumbs and let them happen. Just like everything else in this country. We no longer believe in tyranny or revolution. Instead we choose to just gripe about these problems on internet message boards. Am I way off?

I know that the headquarters thing is over the top, but you get the drift of what I'm trying to say.
That stunt is the kind of thing that Jesse Jackson and his crew would pull.
All it does is divide people and nothing really changes as a result.

So what has made a difference over time with regard to this subject? Nothing as you point out? Why then is a mind a terrible thing to waste? I'm referring to the United ***** College Fund's late campaign - who is wasting it? And who is responsible for these minds being wasted? Whites? Blacks? Indians? The governement? Whom? In other words, why does anyone have to be responsible for anyone elses education or well being? I worked my butt off getting through college, why didn't anyone claim that my mind was a terrible thing to waste and help me out? Let me point out here guys, I'm not a racist and really don't give a rat's a$$ what color your skin is so long as you find your own way through this life without blaming someone else or some other group for what you don't have. I think that's all these guys are trying to say. Although I don't condone their fight, I can't blame them.

This seems like a pretty ballsy move by the college Republicans. It keeps the debate of equal treatment in the forefront in a way that only college students can. Other groups around the country have held afirmative action bake sales. Different races pay different amounts for baked goods. White students always pay the most. Its just a way to get people talking about the issue, without harming anyone. Mostly, is makes liberals on campus angry. For that reason alone, it is worth it.
