Lately John Kerry et al. and the left-media have been rubbing it in everybodies face that Kerry is a great "war hero" from Vietnam, apparently hoping that his deeds while in service will pull the wool over the eyes of Americans regarding his pro-communist, anti-American actions after the war. It's well established that Kerry isn't the all-American boy he touts himself to be, and I think that most people will see him for what he really is by election time, what really burns my butt is the fact that calling himself a "war hero" to me dishonors the actions of those men who faithfully served their country, both in body and in mind.
Because of this I thought I'd post a link to the DoD site that has the citations of all 3,440 Medal of Honor recipients since the Civil War. John Kerry can't hold a candle to any of the men (and one woman) on this esteemed roster of REAL national heroes, and insults their memory by even attempting to classify himself among their company.
My grandfather was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in WWII along with a Bronze star and Purple Heart. I never heard him talk at all about the war when he was alive. Inever knew him as a war hero, only as Grandpa. Noone in my family really knows what he did in WWII to be rewarded the medals, only the men he served with and maybe his wife.

If it were possible to take a poll of those 3440 CMH holders, there probably wouldn't be one of them that considered himself a "Hero" they would tell you they were only doing their job, and that they knew of others that deserved the honor more than themselves.
As the years pass and I read about actions concerning the award of a particular medal to one person or another during an action, I have come to the conclusion that in many cases the system is not working the way it is supposed to.
There were Marines on Guadalcanal that were not even put in for medals because their commander stated that "They are Marines, that is their job" on the other hand there are many awarded medals for an action that were not even close to where the event took place.
Men have been put in for Medals that were down graded by other authority so as not to cheapen the higher award, This usually has occured when an enlisted was put in for the CMH or Silver Star. An officer, in the same action as enlisted will be awarded the Silver Star while the enlisted in the unit are awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for Valor regardles of whether the officer distinguished himself above those enlisted at that action.
I have read two versions of the citation that supposedly accompanied John Kerry's Silver Star and either of them would be fitting for that award, I do question why his crew was not included in that award as their presence and actions in support of him took the same amount of courage and dedication as was required of him. This in no way cheapens his actions, I do believe it should have been extended to the others in that unit.
I saw John Kerry for what he was the day before the Iowa Caucus. Some Vietnam vet emerges to testify how John Kerry saved his life in Vietnam years ago. The fact that this guy emerged when he did was sickening. Why did he wait until a crucial point in Kerry's political career to make his move?
There were many, many instances of life saving incidents in Vietnam...it's part of war. There were many, many instances of getting there too late....that's the other part.
If you want to see the heroes, go to the wall and pay your respects.
To Rtread: Do you think that only heroes are dead one? I don't think there is nothing heroic to be dead. Only thing that make you a hero is what you do with your life time.
Not to disrespect those who gave their only ones.
War Heroes are all those who fought the war that kept our independence. And all the heroes that made this country(my case finnland and your case where ever you live) to be what it is today(not perfect but close enought). We have to make sure that we can be heroes for the next generation.

No John, I don't believe only the casualties are heroes. I believe heroism comes in many forms. I do believe using a case of heroism to further political ambitions is despicable.

I agree, real heroes don't brag on their heroism, and many heroes have never been honored as such, nor do they seek any glory.
Kerry is however a hero--- a hero to Hanoi Jane!
What Kerry did was a disgrace to everyone who wore a uniform!

Kerry and Clark will make quite a team.
Kerry protested against the people still fighting in Nam after his tour of duty and Gen. Clark got fired. They have the backing of Klinton, a true draft dodger.
And the Dem.'s are worried about Bush's military record?
