I personally think an instant check is appropriate to make sure some felon or mentally incompetent person isn't buying a gun. I don't think any records need to be kept. Gunowners who pass should get to buy the gun. Felons and mentally incompetent people who don't pass should be prosecuted or committed to a mental hospital. How simple can it get?

As long as the list only contains the names of those legally prohibited from purshasing firearms, and never records the names of those who do purchase firearms legally (no records kept of transactions on the system to identify those who buy guns), then I'm cool with it.

Mike, you're missing the point here but we're on the same side. If a felon tries to purchase a gun illegally, send him to prison. You don't need a firearms purchase record kept because his crime is listed on his prison record. Same thing for a mentally incompetent person. There is absolutely NO REASON for a gun purchase record to be kept at all.

Agreed. Any type of registration, I'm totally opposed to. Verify whether the person is a law abiding citizen or felon/incompetant, then that's it.

Rereading my post, I think maybe I wasn't being clear.
What I meant was that I think that felons and violently unstable (crazy) people, should be automatically entered upon conviction or adjudication into a registry that is used for the instant background checks. If a prohibited person tries to buy a gun their name and/or personal info would match the info on the system and deny the purchase. The system would incorporate some method of discreetly notifying local police who can respond immediately to the dealers place of business to investigate and apprehend the person in question.
What I don't want is for the government to compile a list of names of people who are approved to buy firearms and/or have had background checks for firearms purchases run on them. Such records would be akin to registration, which is something I very much oppose.
I didn't understand you before Mike. A felon does have a criminal record which is the current system being used for background checks. A mentally incompetent person could also be entered into that same system since it is restricted to law enforcement only on a need to know basis. We're on the same page here.
