Well, has everyone heard about this new whammy the state is trying to pull?? I heard last nite on the local news that NYS, in its infinite wisdom, wants to put additional fees on pistol permitting AND make it manditory to renew & pay for your pistol permit every 5 years!
I am not postive on the actual amount and increases, but I do remember something like $25/ammendment (currently, i pay $3 for up to 3 guns on an ammendment) and the news may have even said that the renewals would be in excess of $100. I don't know about you but, to me, that stinks.
I have no problems with registering my pistols or having to go through a NICS check (shouldn't bother any non-criminals?) but when they start jacking fees and trying to price a permit out of range, that's a bit too much.
The other jist to the story ws that this was going to be a State thing, whereas now it is up to individual counties to regulate the permits. They try and justify it by saying it will help keep guns out of the wrong peoples hands. Yeh right, simple fact the criminals are always going to have guns. What helps keep crime down (to some degree) is that they know that private citizens may have a bigger gun or more ammo . Go ask some of the boys down in Texas.
Something to think about & complain about. I hope this doesn't come to fruition and the beaurocrats see the errors of their ways.

I understand why some law abiding citizens don't believe any non-criminal shouldn't mind NICS checks and registrations. But let me tell you what bothers me about it!
I am not a felon....or even a criminal. (Unless we are talking a parking ticket or two.....and a speeding ticket or two in nearly 50 years of life.) But the "problem" I have with registration and/or NICS checks and the like......are a little of what you are seeing now.
First.....there are reasonable fees....and restrictions. (Any law abiding citizen can understand those!?!)
Then.....you have to "demonstrate a need" to some government official.
Followed.....by "increasing fees" as you are now experiencing.
Next.....those "fees will be prohibitive"....only the "rich" will be able to afford it.
Finally.....when confiscation becomes the law of the land. They already have your name, address, phone number, and know exactly what you own and where it is kept.
So what do you do now! Outright revolt....or trust that "our" government would never be tryrannical. So what's really the big deal...right?!? After all....recently due to staggering increases in costs of ammunition (taxes), registration fees (taxes), and stupdifying restrictions on use....."it really isn't worth the hassle anyway".
If you'd like to know what follows all of that? Visit places like Buchenwald, Auschwitz, Siberian gulags, Cambodian killing fields..............

Doughboy, I'm not familiar with the laws in NY. Here in Va. it has always been the law that you must re-new your permits every five years...It was the same way when I lived in Ga.
I'm not sure if I am thinking about the same kind of permit that you are in reference to. I have a concealed weapons permit. The mere act of owning a hand gun does not require a permit in many of the southern states.
The initial cost of a concealed weapon permit for me in Georgia was somewhere around a hundred and twenty five dollars...Virginia was a little less with a cost of somewhere around fifty or sixty dollars.
That is for the permit it does'nt matter if I have one weapon or a thousand.
Can you expound a little on what it is that the permit is for? Is it just to OWN them, or for a concealed permit.
I feel for you guys in places like NY, NJ, and Maryland. I suppose it won't be long before it is like that everywhere. And I shudder to think how most Americans will likely respond.......(or should I say, lack of response?)!
In Pennsylvania currently you do not need a permit to own a firearm....long gun or handgun. Age requirements: 18 - long gun, 21 - handgun.
However you do need a permit to CCW. I believe it is $20. without a photo ID....and $25 with a photo ID. (The extra money is to have your picture directly on the permit. Always a good idea in my opinion.) And the permit needs renewed every five years I believe!
Dave
P.S. The other good thing is that as of a number of years ago Pennsylvania went to a "shall issue" state. (Previously you need letters of recommendation, a sheriff's approval, etc.) Now you just have to not be a convicted felon, etc.

The day that they require permits to own a gun in my area will be the day I voluntarily become a criminal.
