I think it should be 100% punishment. Do that, make it HARD time and severe and I think that in itsself would act as a deterrent for others.
Our Judicial system is a joke right now. You can committ murder, get a crooked lawyer and somehow justify your actions and spoend 3 years in prison and get out. What the hell ? I'm all for a fair trial, I'm all for a judicial system that has SOME flex, but what we have right now is a joke and mockery and the criminals of this country absolutely LOVE it.
I am not sure what jails are like in Turkey now, but in the early 60's they were hell, you got a 7X3 foot cell, no light, a bench with straw on it for a bed and a pot to go in! No windows, just a slit in the door to pass you your food.
There were very few repeat offenders and parole was not even in the dictionary!

Just like the police officer question, I'm going to answer this as both. It has to be a deterent, it is for me. But I would have to say for the majority of things it is a punishment system

That sounds good Taz - I'm all for capital punishment myself. Let's not build more jails, let's build more gas chambers or more chairs, or simply more 270 rounds.
I agree with you Stealthy - our judicial system is a joke. I've been through it myself for divorce and wrongly accused domestic violence. Talk about a system that absolutely hates guys. This system here in MI is so wildly messed up that if a cop is dispatched to a domestic situation, state law says someone is going to jail and if the woman doesn't press charges, the state will. If a guy were to call 911 on his wife because she is let's say, beating the crap out of him with a baseball bat and throwing and breaking things and the guy is just trying to get away from her, the woman MAY be arrested, but more than likely the guy will. If she is arrested, the charges won't stick and she will get stuck in a victim's class on abuse. If the guy is arrested for as little as yelling at his spouse (considered "family violence" here in MI), if it's his first arrest, he will go through min 6 months probation and be put into a wife beaters class that takes a min of a year to complete, and thousands of dollars to do it, and one evening of your life every week. Is this justice? Not to me. Yes, there are a lot of guys out there beating their significant others and that is wrong and these guys should be punished. But when a woman freaks out and dials 911 in a fit of rage against her husband, why should this guy be punished? (me) Lost my rights to pocess a firearm of any sort for five years until I could get my record exspounged. Is this a detterant? I don't think so. There has been many cases where guys have come out of the court house and flat out shot the b!tch in front of everyone because of the pressure this puts on them. Now, I'm not condoning shooting anyone for any reason, but to illustrate a point here - is the helping deter people away from crimes? No.

Jorgy I beg to differ, right now the prison system is a school for criminals, when they get caught they are sent to prison, they watch TV, they play games, they have conjugal visits, they do drugs, and they teach each other how to be better criminals. This is not punishment!
They need to make prisons a place that one would never want to return to. No Tv! No library! No gym! Nothing but a small cell by themselves where they get fed and that is it! There are people in our prison system today that the second they are released commit another crime to where they can return to thier friends and the easy life!

badshotbob - another sad part is the charges and time served is solely dependent on the prosecution and defense (how good they are at what thy're doing) and the Judge and jury.
I don't mind flex in the system - but geez, c'mon, muderers doing a few years and then back on the streets ?
Taz - I agree 100%. The LAST thing I'd do it let the inmates work out to get stronger and meaner so they can do more damage when released back into society.
And BTW, why are criminals released when most everyone knows good and well they'll do crime again ? Nothing pisses me off more than guys doing violent crimes weeks or months after being released. I think the courts and people that released these people should be held accountable .
Our lovely Democrat female governor is setting the plans in motion to release many criminals - not only the minor stuff like B&E, but the rapists and murderers too. Says it'll help with overcrowded jails. Why would anyone want the crime rate to go back up?

A man will be released from prison in SE Pennsylvania today. This man raped and murdered a 12 year old girl. He was sentenced to life without parole. I'm not sure about all the details but it has something to do with a former governor. Life without parole means you die in prison, right?
