RE: Patriot Act
Hip, I posted something in the Ben Franklin topic about the HSA being designed to prevent terrorism, not reduce Americans' liberties. Although you are mentioning incidents where it appears to have been stretched and misapplied (illegally perhaps), it does not sound like the HSA is the problem. It appears to be individuals overstepping their bounds in isolated cases.
I think the majority of congressmen and senators who voted for HSA wanted to better protect America. I think Bush and tom Ridge also want to better protect America. I do not think there is a conspiracy at their level to take away civil liberties and rights. I do think people who use the HSA authority improperly should be punished and/or reprimanded and a crystal clear message sent out that the HSA is not to be abused.
I am all for finetuning and revising the HSA. I think we need to make sure it is doing the job it was designed to do at the least cost in annoyance, etc. to Americans. I think it would be a mistake to throw out the entire HSA as we would be lowering our security levels and possibly opening us back up to further terrorist acts.
