Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default what do you think about this for a new law?

I've thought for a long time that for the commander in chief should have military experience ..........

I think this should be part of the requirements for a person who runs for the highest post in the country......
If he is going to govern our troops, I feel he should have experience in the ranks, even if only one year.

What do you think? and.......... how would you implement this?

I don't think it should be required, but it could help. The president has plenty of military advisors to help him make decisions. So I don't feel its necessary to make them have military experience.

I don't . There are so many other things just as important.

I don't either. I don't know how being in the military can make anyone any better of a president and that is more what I'm worried about.

I can see pro's and con's but it would depend on the individual.
I can't imagine some prima-donna like Douglas McArthur being president.
I don't see it in the near future but what about if and when a women becomes president.

I am a woman, and I have thought about that side of it. I have two daughters. I think it would be a good thing if all of our kids had a year of military service in. In the revolutionary war the minute men were called upon at a moments notice. At that time everyone knew how to handle a gun though.
Now we need to teach all of our citizens to handle a gun, like the minute men. Then we would be a well protected, informed nation.
Isreal requires it of men & women. I think this would give everyone a soundly based equilibrium to start from, in defending our country.
I would feel better protected if our leader had an understanding of our military first hand.
It may never happen... I still think it is a logical idea

Sunset, I think its a great idea.

The military can be a good experience for a young person. You are exposed to different American cultures and values, and you are no stranger to hard work. You appreciate America a lot more after you leave that environment.

It may sound strange but to experience the military is to experience something in the way of martial law. After that freedom is a very sweet thing.

Yes, that would help every president in my opinion.

Sunset, the founders of this country made the Commander-in-chief a civilian on purpose. They had a historically justified fear that without proper oversight, the military could be used against its citizens. The Federalist Papers speak specifically to the matter.

I suggest you read this.

Yes, but she is only suggesting military experience, not a member of the military.
