Sad thing this company started in Endicott NY. About two miles from my house. At it's peak it employed almost 20,000 in our community. Now it's under 1,000. It was recently reported that they polluted over 300 acres around their facilties. People can't sell their homes and their risks of getting cancer if they stay in their homes is huge. Many clusters of cancer have been reported including leukemia in a number of children.
Now it looks like they are going to send many of their jobs overseas where they can savbe on labor and pollute other countries water and soil.
Good thing we gave countries like China most favored status. Even though their record on human rights is terrible.
Just curious Charlie, what kind of materials did they pollute with? I imagine there are some chemical byproducts from manufacturing computers and parts but am not familiar with the specifics. Thanks.

Since 1980, more than 780,000 pounds of chemicals, called volatile organic compounds, have been removed from the ground, according to IBM's plan. But the cleanup has a long way to go.
They use some funky stuff for cleaning the boards over there.

In my opinion, short of international terrorism, China is the United States' number one problem.
Someone with some cajones needs to stand up to them and force them to adopt proper business practices.
Why don't you hear the same screaming in the international community about China as you hear about the United States, even though the monetary policy, trade policy, and labor policies of China are far more odious that ours? Think about it for five minutes...the answer will come to you.
Let me make sure I have this right...In the last twenty five years, some 390 tons of dirt has been removed from their site. (390 tons is about enough to make a real good dirt bike hump).
At one point in time, they employed some twenty thousand people. That's twenty thousand people who otherwise would not have had a job.
Now they are employing some one thousand people.
So,,,it would be safe to say that IBM has been the direct cause of many many millions of dollars being placed in the local economy over the years.
