Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default What should be acceptable in School(Topic-Guns)

I was talking to my g/f last night about her one elective classes that she is taking, which is some kind of drawing class. She attending a school in the city in the suburbs of Kansas City. Her assignment was to draw a picture of a hand holding something. So I said draw a picture of a hand holding a gun. Sounded good to me. But she just laughed and said the school for sure wouldn't allow it and if she tried to draw a gun, she would most likely have to talk to a counselor or suspension or something like that.

I was suprised, I only graduated from HS about 3 years ago. I went to a school with around 100 people per class that most all the county went to. And nobody would even think twice about a picture of a gun being drawn. I even took parts of my gun stocks into woods class to refinish them, even made life-size guns out of wood and painted them to make them look real as they could. And would walk through the halls and it wasn't a big deal.

This makes me wonder. Even though guns and violence in schools should be taken very seriously, how do you draw the line. One is an urban and one is a rural school, but shouldn't the same laws and rules about guns be taken the same. I just think a picture of just a hand and trigger and grip area of a gun, is going a little too far to be called possible violence. What do you think should be allowed and not allowed?

yup...makes perfect sense.....we can't have a picture of a gun in a person's hand but we can hand out condoms.

Kshunter, it only gets worse from here on. People in positions of power design laws, rules and policies to protect people and make our society or schools safe. Unfortunately, laws and policies made without using common sense are overbearing, restrict freedoms and eventually prove to be quite useless. After time passes, these laws are often "interpreted" so that a spirit of the law's intent is enforced rather than the actual language which frequently leaves many gaps and areas unaddressed.

Alright, get rid of the jail bait and find yourself someone who won't get you thrown in the slammer if things don't turn out well

Have her draw the picture and have a caption underneath it:

"The Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States"

and see what the "teacher says".

Shes 18, not much younger than me. Yeah I think it would be funny to have the caption at the bottom, I mean I just don't see how it can "not" be allowed to draw a pic of a gun... blows my mind

Not surised one bit. All the paranoia these days has folks giving up freedoms for a perceived increase in safety.

Society draws the line...Public opinion draws the line.

When I was in high school, There was a "shooting club" It was as much a part of the school as the "golf club" or "football team".

I still live in a pretty rural area...Hunters safety or..."Firearm safety" as it is called is still part of the curriculum at the local high school. In fact, it has been a point of contention over the last month or so in the local paper...I'm not sure how much longer it will last.

It can not be denied that a very large portion of our society is very afraid of firearms.

When society is afraid of something, they tend to legislate it out of existence.

That concept can be called wrong, against the constitution, or any other titles that you want to give it. But it is what it is.

It's a very sobering thought indeed to know that a few people can make such huge changes in the way America lives.
