Thats true Cal, of course I think any American president would be smart enough to figure that out. But the email I received is an example of politics/corporations being in bed together. It makes little sense, except that American drug companies don't want to face the competition.
I think most American companies feel the same way. Partly it's the cheap labor and some of it is copyright infringement, etc. many foreign companies are subsidized more heavily than U.S. companies (steel comes readily to mind) and thus can cut their prices much deeper than American companies. And silly American president who actually does the right thing and still gets criticized by so many ignorant Americans who do not have a clue about defending a country and are often self-serving at the expense of our country.[:@]

Pharmaceutical companys are forced by canadian Government to set prices lower. So in turn they charge Americans higher prices to make up the difference. As for competiton there are many companies outside the US that compete and charge the same as US companies. Have you ever seen the conditions under which some of the foreign drugs are made or the lack of controls. OUr FDA rules and regs are very strict you must have two people to do almost every step of a process one to do it and one to verify that it is done correctly. Then don't forget the cost of lawsuits even those that are not related to production a doctor giving wrong dose of a med or for the wrong purpose than intended. it will be the company that gets sued because of their deep pockets their are many reasons for the high prices. Greed is one small one.

You are some-what right on this. Overseas pharm. groups force canadian and american pharm. groups to set prices lower.
90% of drugs are born in the US and then tested overseas. We don't allow human testing that much, but France and Germany---man!
What about the counterfeit drugs? There are hundreds because the Pharm. groups are trying to cut cost. They arn't actually counterfeit, just classified as such. They may or may not contain the proper amount of the active ingredient.

Farmcntry and RCW both made posts showing the complexities involved in anything that has to do with health care.
Everyone wants the best, everyone wants immediate and unlimited recourse ($$$$$$$$$$$$$) when something goes wrong and everyone wants "the government" involved every step of the way, especially the part where the government pays for it (as in the new prescription drug package to be phased in by 2006).
Everyone wants a "free market" until it becomes part of the market in which their goods and services are profferred. Unions for example, want nothing to do with a "free market".
Americans and our attack dog legal system are driving goods and services out of the country to friendlier environs...and we stand around scratching our heads and wondering why.
We are driving everything out of the US. Here in NC have you heard of the furniture market? Thomasville and Highpoint? We were the furniture guru's. Now guess what. Almost everything has moved to other countries along with Textile markets. Soon it will be tobacco and then beer and then and then and then. It will keep going on.
Made in the U.S.A. (sent to China, put together in Tailand, inspected in Brazil, and shipped back to US to sell.)

No one is going to hold a drug maker responable for a dr,s wrong doing or neglect( guess who hands out most drigs anyways- it isnt the DR)
But yes it is called greed- the drug company or the insurence company set VERY high profet margins& keep it that way.
Most other companys would be charged , investagated for gouging the consumers- but they have many lawyers& polticans to help im out of this& other things. Its not like the cable tv, microsoft, breakfast cereal etc investgations congress has done to see if there playing fair- non of those things are needed for life& death situations - unlike drugs.
Nothing like a drug pusher with congress men in there pockets.
