Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Tolerance, where do you draw your line?

I find it interesting that there are so many people who are actually upset and have resorted to name calling and labelling over others position or belief regarding one of the other threads, Fat people. In particular and specifically Lazy Fat people.
Now this is not about that subject but the reaction of some here to others opinions.

Regardless of the issue, where do you draw the line of tolerance when it comes to the personal habits, physical traits or behavior of others?

When does my intolerance to things that effect me become intolerant to you and why?

Logs, even tho you and I have only met once in person, I think you know me from this board as an easy going type of person. In my profession of sales, you learn to get along with most people, but sometimes people get pushed too hard and far and then it all breaks loose. If I would have spoken what I really think on that other post, I KNOW I would have been banned from this forum !!

I think my blood pressure just went thru the roof !!!

Sswpriz, I don't have a problem with people speaking their mind and I don't think you do either. I realize the board has rules but that subject is what made me wonder but is not the issue.

This may help you understand what Im tlaking about here........

I was breaking in a young Sgt. about 15 years ago and he asked me two questions after spending about five days together.
The first was " do you hold a grudge, because I heard never to cross you?" and "Just so I don't step on your toes, what pisses you off?"

Well the answer to number one was and is," I don't ever forget but I will either forgive or move on as long as you don't do something to stop me, like repeat the offence."

The answer to number two is simpler to read but much deeper in meaning, "I don't care what anyone else does as long as it does not adversely effect me and mine in a negitive way" This is the key to my degree of Tolerance.
One has to think a little harder about who are "me and mine" and what "adversely effect me" means.

People who stand in the middle of the isles and carry on a conversation in stores or malls are idiots. People who talk on cell phone while driving are irresponsible jerks, pull over. People who fart in elevators are a$$hole. You get the drift Im sure.
Now people who don't take care of themselves in the mulitude of ways there are to neglect ones body ei: drugs alcohol, over eating, smoking, sexually transmitted deseases etc have great negitive impact on me and mine in many ways. Religous zealot who attempt to force their beliefs on society be it prolife, Muslim radicals, pro abortion ( lack of religion), the Pope making or issuing opinions or criticism of US actions etc all effect me in an adverse way. In the simplist case they cost me money in taxes, medical cost in group health and in some cases they just block my travel route.

Now how I feel and what I think about these cases have no effect on others. They are my feelings and my thoughts. When I make them public they are open to criticism and that is the question. Does anyone have the right to call someone cold hearted or a bigot because they don't understand how personal behavior is not so personal when it effects others. Why is my limit of Tolerance intolerable to them. I can articulate how these people adversely effect me but will that change their minds, open their eyes or just let themselves Feel about thing? Are they the one who are insensitive to me and those like me? Are they intolerant to my intolerance????

Logs, Thats a very interesting question.

My personal level of intolerance revolves around two central issues. Honesty and intelligence.

I don't really care much if a person is fat, skinny, bald, hairy, white, black, poor, wealthy, has no teeth etc.

I pretty much like everyone "right off the bat".

It's when they open their mouth and start speaking that my "toler-o-meter" starts activating.

My tolerance gets very short when others think I ought to pay more in taxes to take care of them.

Mine is a simple policy. If I get to the point where I have no faults then I MIGHT fire away at someone else'e shortcommings. I don't expect that day will ever come. I may bash somebodies Ideas but not thier person. Do on to others is the finest rule ever put in print.
