ORANGE CITY, Fla. "” A mob of shoppers rushing for a sale on DVD players trampled the first woman in line and knocked her unconscious as they scrambled for the shelves at a Wal-Mart Supercenter (search).
Patricia VanLester had her eye on a $29 DVD player, but when the siren blared at 6 a.m. Friday announcing the start to the post-Thanksgiving sale, the 41-year-old was knocked to the ground by the frenzy of shoppers behind her.
" She got pushed down, and they walked over her like a herd of elephants," said VanLester' s sister, Linda Ellzey. " I told them, ' Stop stepping on my sister! She' s on the ground!' "
Ellzey said some shoppers tried to help VanLester, and one employee helped Ellzey reach her sister, but most people just continued their rush for deals.
" All they cared about was a stupid DVD player," she said Saturday.
Paramedics called to the store found VanLester unconscious on top of a DVD player, surrounded by shoppers seemingly oblivious to her, said Mark O' Keefe, a spokesman for EVAC Ambulance.
She was flown to Halifax Medical Center (search) in Daytona Beach, where doctors told the family VanLester had a seizure after she was knocked down and would likely remain hospitalized through the weekend, Ellzey said. Hospital officials said Saturday they did not have any information on her condition.
" She' s all black and blue," Ellzey said. " Patty doesn' t remember anything. She still can' t believe it all happened."
Ellzey said Wal-Mart officials called later Friday to ask about her sister, and the store apologized and offered to put a DVD player on hold for her.
Wal-Mart Stores spokeswoman Karen Burk said she had never heard of a such a melee during a sale.
" We are very disappointed this happened," Burk said. " We want her to come back as a shopper."

The best times I' ve ever experienced with family or friends have been spontaneous.
The worst times often occur when the occasion is over-planned and everyone involved has varying ideas of what the ideal results should look like. Couple that with stress and money....
The holidays bring out the best and the worst in people.

I think I' ll be making Home made Pasta and a lasagna again this year. The worse thing that can happen is my daughter will make a huge mess. You should have seen last years sausage escapade.

The lines started forming at about 3 or 4 AM in the Morning! At one Best Buy thier were over 500 people waiting in line for the store to open. One Word...Ridiculous.
I am beginning to hate Christmas.

That' s typical for a Wal-Mart on " Black Friday" . [:' (][:@]
I refuse to go shopping on the friday after Thanksgiving, or heck, that whole entire weekend! If I had my way, I' d shop on the internet, which I do most of the time anyways.

I went " Hell Shopping" one year the day after Thanksgiving. Never again! I hate to shop to begin with, but that was unreal. Got to the store in the pitch dark and stood outside in the freezing cold for hours. When 7:00am finally arrived and it was time for the doors to open, two women jumped out of a car in the parking lot and ran to the front of the line. A fight broke out and those two women were lucky to make it back to their car alive. I' ve never seen such insanity among otherwise normal people.

Those retirees down there in FLA. are on a limited income and they aren' t going to let anything stand in their way when it comes to bargains.

I quess I am lucky to be broke. All the time I need to spend all my Xmas shopping money is about one hour in Cabelas. I would not even need that much time if it were not for the time I spend drooling on all the stuff I can' t afford. I have gotten to the point where I just get gift certificates for everyone and let them battle the traffic and lines.
