My neighbor, the local Game Warden, heartily agrees. Although he will take the occaisional Buck, his primary focus is on Does and since our Buck to Doe ratio is about 1:15 I have a tendency to agree with him.
On my " home turf" the ratio is about 8 or 9 to 1.
Where I prefer to hunt in another part of Ohio, I' d guess its closer to 1.5 to 1.
There are many old school hunters out there that still think you shouldn' t shoot does at all. And among those that are okay with shooting does there are an awful lot that think you should shoot only mature does.
Does must be killed ,but babies I can' t bring myself to do that they remind me to much of my dog or my big fat cat. The older I get the softer I get,but it would be helpful to have tender meat ,since I only have 4 teeth left.
I drive all of my hunting buddies nuts when I go to camp in Wisconsin with the deer I shoot. Since you get multiplel tags I' ve always looked for the fawns. I always joke it' s because it takes more skill to shot the little ones. I always thought that I was the only one around who has said, no, that one is too big.

Yes the fawns may taste better but to seriously adjust the Buckoe ratio it is more effective to shoot mature Doe. You may in fact be culling 3 deer, Doe and two unborn Deer, from the herd and there is no doubt about the sex of the deer. That little button buck you shoot this season may be an eight or better in a couple of years

I' ve shot many bucks and many does, including two yearlings that I can remember. The yearlings definitely taste better, but there isn' t as much of them. For my money a nice small doe or a 2nd year spike is the best bet, but since my total number of hunting days is usually pretty limited these last couple of years I admit that I will shoot the first deer that steps in front of me, regardless of size or sex.
If it' s brown, it' s down.
