Yes this question was a set up! I am assuming that if you frequent this site/forum you have probably considered this question....and most have answered yes.
Having read numerous threads at this site, (like....Colorado' s Make My Day Law), I believe that there is still quite a bit of " misinformation" circulating among gun owners. At worst some of these " myths" can get a person and their family members killed. At best you could find yourself having " survived" the unthinkable only to have the balance of your life ruined....incarcerated, permanently disabled, and financially destitute. Any or all three of the above. What you DON' T know can indeed be costly!
There are a number of very outstanding books which dispell the more common myths, as well as provide invaluable information regarding this subject. Two of the better books are both by the same author. They are....IN THE GRAVEST EXTREME, and THE AYOOB FILES: THE BOOK. Both were written by Massad F. Ayoob. No doubt, many of you have already read these books. But for those that haven' t, I highly recommend them. They provide real information in a " no nonsense" kind of format. They are " easy reads" , particularly for those interested in this subject. But most of all...they could save your lives, your possessions, and maybe even your sanity....if you are ever truly unfortunate enough to need to use lethal force in self defense!
If you give them a read....let me know what you think of them!
P.S. If you are in LE and haven' t read them...you owe it yourself, your family, and your brother officers to get them read ASAP!!!!

I have had alot of conversations with friends about this one. I am what some people would call a gun nut. I have 1 or 2 guns for just about any occasion under the sun. With all of that, I do not have any of them loaded in my house for self defense. But I have a 80# german shepard that is more lethal than any gun I have to anyone who would walk onto my property without me letting them into the door.

I definitely would, that' s what they' re there for! Furthermore, I would use a gun to protect any of my loved ones, or, to aid a victim of a violent crime in progress, i.e. rape, kidnapping, etc... Like the saying goes, better to be judged by twelve than carried by six! And, unlike Jorgy, my dog would just run around the house and try to give the perp a frisbee to throw. Damn those yellow labs.......[8D]
Akbound, good topic, I think using a firearm for self defense is very hard to answer for most people or maybe its just me, but I think most people would' nt know what they are capable of until they are confronted with that situation, I would hate to have to use one, but if it came down to it I think I could and would, especially if my family was in harms way.

No, I would not use a firearm in defense. I keep them to look pretty on my walls. If attacked by 3 gun weilding thugs, I' ll take my chances and attempt to beat them off myself and children with a broom handle and mop bucket.
Hey Bigbore, I got one of those Labs. The worst thing he would do to
somebody would be to " Love them to Death" . [:-] or give them a bad rash where
he was trying to lick there face off.[]
But on a more serious note. Hell yes I would use a firearm to defend myself,
my family, friends and neigbors. I would not think twice

I wouldn' t. I would keep an unloaded 870 under the bed. If someone breaks in, I would grab the 870 and rack the slide, because as we all know, the sound of an 870 slide racking is the scariest sound in the world to an intruder. If he or they don' t get the point and leave, I' ll just keep racking the slide until they do get the point and know where I' m at and know that I really reallymean business.
Unfortunately I live in the real world where racking a shotgun slide will not only not deter a determined home invader, but will give your position away, giving him/them the upper hand. A flashlight and my 9mm loaded with a hi cap mag full of +P federal hydrashocks would be my tools of defence. Would I hesitate to shoot a stranger threatening my family? In a word, no. I have a philosophy that the the lives of the members of my family are the most precious things under my roof. The life of an intruder trying to harm my family is worth nothing more than that of a fly I would crush without a second thought. It may sound self centered and selfish of me, but the lives of my family, who are productive members of society, are worth infinately more than that of a scumbag who chooses to prey on others.

I have strived to put myself in a position where that particular situation is most likely not gonna happen. I moved to a town where the most recent murder was back during prohabition.
However, the lifestyle that I live involves thousands of strangers a year entering not so much my " house" ...but an extension of it. (Motel lobby) With that said, my lobby is under camera coverage twenty four hours a day. There is also sound coverage with speakers distributed throughout the house.
I am one of the few folks on here who will admit to having many loaded weapons in my house. My wife is well trained in the handling of weapons, and not to sound like a blowhard, I would like to think that I am also.
If she is manning the front desk, or I am, we have a couple of " key phrases" worked out that when heard on one of the speakers in the house, the result will be a massive display of gunfire...no questions asked.
So...the answer to your question is...While I strive to NOT be in that position...Yes.
