There are alot of smart people on this board. I also noticed that there are alot of members, more than I thought. Instead of arguing so much on here, (not that we shouldn' t do it at all), we should be writing to congressional reps. and Senators and such. Could help more than just debating on the boards. Just a thought, not meaning to degrade the lively debates on here that I love, it just seems sometimes that it may be good ideas wasted on people who for the most part agree with us.
I do write and call my reps on a regular basis. Most of them respond, if not personally, with a personal reply from a staff member. I' ve had my state reps call me on the phone to discuss my questions. I' ve only had one congressman who didn' t respond in what I thought was an appropriate manner and one governor (gone now) who also failed to make a clear response. Other than that, if you call or write your elected officials, they WILL respond.
My suggestion is fax - they respond very quickly to faxes because they are generally inundated with e-mails and phone messages tend to get lost - faxes work great.

RE: Let' s do this...
BigBore I also do right send email whatever I can, but now I am stuck in a rut, I have the Queen(HILLARY [X(] ) in charge doesn' t do much good to write to her. I will keep trying though, ah crap now you went and got me crying and all upset (made me think of NY' s higher power), very, very, very, sad
Contacting a politician who holds views different from yours is much more imporatant than contacting those already likely to vote the way you want.
If my congressman continually votes against prescription benefits for seniors and I WANT them, I need to keep writing and calling to make my voice heard. If I already agree with the way he votes, there isn' t much point in calling him at all.

There is hope.... (no I don' t mean sudden heart attack for your favortie Senator)....I mean move! I am! Simply pack up and find a new " home" . Heck, its easy today...we have paved roads. The pioneers....they had it tough!
The wife and I are headed to Alaska this upcoming spring! I' m 48, retired from the U.S. Army in 1994. (Have worked since then...(of course)....you didn' t think you could live on an enlisted mans military retirement...did you???) But due to some recent events in our personal lives...I' m done! Yep! I' ve had enough. No more working for banks, mortgage companies, credit unions, etc. We' re heading North, building a small A-Frame, paying cash as we build, (few codes, zoning restrictions, etc. in most of Alaska), and going to spend 3 - 6 months each year in the " field" . I know, I know, really hard life....but someones got to do it!
Like I told my youngest brother....." if you wait for the numbers to be right, you' ll die waiting" !
Good luck to you!!!!!(With her....you' ll need it!)

RE: Let' s do this...
Akbound I envy you, that is great, one of my all time dreams. As time as gone on I can no longer dream the dream of moving to Alaska. I have 12 disc in my back messed up 6 are very bad. So as you can see I am somewhat stuck as what I can do. Plus I have put alot of work into the property that I own now. I have three ponds, cleared the woods, built a small cabin. My wife and I did ALL the work ourselfs and don' t just want to walk away, to many memories. Plus our kids are going to a good small school that cares about education not just sports etc....Oh thanks for your service to our country, and live the dream that we all would love. Sounds like you have a good idea, build as you go and get away from all the Bull down here in the lower 48
Stranger Biller I agree, but sometimes I feel like I am writting to a brick wall(atleast a brick wall would be smarter).
Sounds like you have a beautiful property...and a great neighborhood...don' t blame you for not wanting to leave it behind! (But that Senator of yours has got to go!) I would have never believed there were enough " gullible" New Yorkers to do a " thing like that" ! I always heard that New Yorkers prided themselves as having good sense. (I know it wasn' t all New Yorkers....but with that many residents in major metro areas...they got the rest of you outnumbered. You indeed have my symphathy on that issue!) A similar circumstance exist is Pennsylvania. Too many " metro nanny statist" for my taste. Pennsylvania may have been my birthplace....and will always be home in the sense of " family" ....but it' s politics are helplessly mired in " what can government give to me" and good " old fashion" corruption!
We previously lived in Alaska for five years, 92-97. Had bought a house and I was enjoying it. But our son had Muscular Dystrophy and we decided to sell, move to Pennsylvania, and let him have time with his extended family. I don' t regret the move.....but it' s time to go back!
I understand, and empathize, about chronic backaches....and hope yours is not giving you too much misery! And a heartfelt thanks for your support. Good luck with all that you do!

Ya they might... or might not. I have writin to a few & only one responded with other then a form letter.
That was SEn Al simpson , excentric & far right poltican, who said things like dont be paranoid & overreact ,THEY dont want our hunting guns, only the evil assult weapons etc , it is not a slippery slope as some make our gun laws out to be - so dont worry about it etc etc bla bla bla-
then i find out he is doing some talk show on the east coast with chucky shumer, buddy& fellow poltican( one justafises the others existince)& some are one in the same with minial differences.
Somethings im sure Al or chucky dosnt have to worry about....and that is the laws they pass for the rest of us lill ppl.
Ny would be just fine - if it wasnt for all those polticans & laws! lol - that was even before hillry 15 yrs ago that i left there( looked upstate first , then broadined my search for a better place to live ... gave up a lot of moneys& bennafits etc to come here, from there.
But thats ok i dont regret it( do get homesick for all those apples , grapes etc etc etc from back there).. been a good place here raising my kids campared to Metro buffalo etc.
But yep not always so easy to go do what you dream of etc& just move for some to a new location , many circumstances to prevent that sometimes.
