Study: New Blood Needed To Staunch Nurse Shortage
Majority Of New Nurses Over 50, Foreign-Born
POSTED: 11:39 a.m. EST November 12, 2003
WASHINGTON -- Still critical, but getting better. That' s how the nursing shortage could be described at hospitals around the country.
A new analysis finds that hospitals hired 100,000 new nurses last year. The vast majority of them are over 50, or were born in another country.
But a co-author of the study points out that the surge of older nurses is only a temporary solution because they' ll be retiring at the same time hospitals need more nurses to deal with an aging population.
The report in the journal Health Affairs also said that as the number of foreign-born nurses continues to grow, hospitals will need to plan on how to train those workers and bring them on board.
The nursing shortage began about five years ago, partly because experienced nurses were driven away by longer hours and increasingly demanding working conditions.
