The Annapolis city council is scheduled to decide tonight whether to ban the sale and possession of real-looking toy guns in the city.
The proposed ordinance, introduced by Democratic Alderwoman Cynthia Abney Carter, would bar any toy " which substantially duplicates or can reasonably be perceived to be an actual firearm." Offenders could be fined up to $1,000 or jailed for up to 90 days.
Within the past year or two, a kid got shot and killed by Baltimore police officers who mistakingly thought that his toy gun was a real firearm.
That must be what sparked this idea.

I had heard that another reason for it was a video store clerk who called the police about a kid carrying a toy gun and waving it around the store. The thing is, the clerk KNEW it was a toy, and called the police simply because the kid was annoying her and wouldn' t leave.
When toy guns are banned, only criminals will have toy guns
To be honest, this is one I can almost understand. I' m not sure about the ban, but I wouldn' t buy my inner-city kid (easy since I don' t have one) a toy gun that looked real.

I kind of lean that way too. This law only would ban toy guns that stongly resemble real guns. Kids could still have all the orange and green toy guns they want. I don' t see a need for a realistic looking, fake gun.
Vapodog, I' m sure that the parents (not the kids) would be the ones charged should this law go through.

The whole issue stems from ROTTEN PARENTS. When I was a kid I had never even heard of " gang bangers" or drive by shootings etc. People were responsible for their kids and punished their children accordingly.
As a kid I distinctly remember having a cap gun that had small plastic charges as caps (looked like the primer on a cap and ball gun) and the pistol looked identical to snub nosed .38.
We never had ANY problems, I wasn' t allowed to take it outside of the yard and was told never to point it at anyone...
Castration of unwed fathers and tubes tied on unwed mothers with more than two children would start to limit the increasing number of unwanted, uncared for, un disaplined children. The problem starts with the parents before the kid is even born. Milwaukee County (Wi) has 95% of all african-american children born to unwed mothers. Highest in the nation. Get ' em all on the chopping block and some of the problems will go away. (yes that goes for white upper class with illigitamate children as well because they aren' t helping by raising spoiled, lazy, rich snobs that become our politicians).
