Elderly homeowner shoots suspected burglar
12:16 PM CDT on Thursday, August 21, 2003

From 11 News Staff Reports

HOUSTON -- A man fed up with crime in his neighborhood shot and wounded a woman who was allegedly trying to break into his northwest Houston home near 40th and Cornell.

The 74-year-old man' s grandson told police the woman is a known drug addict who has burglarized several homes in the neighborhood.

The homeowner said the suspect repeatedly knocked on his door and windows Thursday morning. When he saw her pick up a brick to apparently break a window, he warned her several times, then grabbed his gun and shot her twice in the torso.

" My grandfather isn' t taking that no more," said James Chaney. He said his grandfather had been burglarized several times.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital. The woman told police she did not want to press charges.

The homeowner, who has health problems and is on oxygen, wasn' t injured. No charges were filed against him.

" Glad to here know charges were filed" I hope some slim ball attorny dod not try to help the dopehead sue

Glad no charges were filed. Sounds like she would have been inside the house in no time and then things could have gotten even worse.

Give pops a badge and send him our way!

Best thing about stories like this is NO ONE is ever going to convict an old man in a case like this.

If he was 40 years old - they would try to hang him for excessive force or even murder.

We need to arm all our old farts to the teeth. Cut them loose, put mini-guns on their wheel chairs and walkers. give them a list, some prunes and we' re living in heaven.

Sounds to me like he gut-shot her twice...oh, the pain! Chances are she' ll spend the rest of her life crapping into a plastic bag, and that' s justice enough for me.

I love to hear stories like this!

My favorite was a 72 year old grandmother who had 3 men break into her house in the middle of the night. She pulled out a .45 auto with a full clip and emptied it. Killed one, wounded another. Would have given just about anything to be a fly on that wall.
