Default Guns and Monkeys...lions and tigers and bear...no more?

So called "exotic" animals may no longer be kept in certain areas if the current trend continues. Ohio had a incident and action is being taken to see to it that it never happens again.

Are the animals to blame? Or is it the owners who are responsible when that cuddly monkey, (or pit bull?) that was hand-fed and raised by 'nice' people harms someone?

Exotic pet owners don't seem to think their animals pose any threat to anyone. Do you?

"Its not the pit bull, its the owners." (It's not the gun, its the gun owner) See a theme here? Or do you draw lines between potentially dangerous "domesticated" animals and wild animals?

I read a facebook post today by a monkey owner who said that monkeys "don't do well around children" because they "see them as other monkeys and want to impose dominance on them."

Here's some of the fallout from the Ohio incident, wherein several dozen lions, tigers, and bears killed a guy and escaped, to be 'put down' later by authorities:

What right do people have to own potentially dangerous animals of any type? Does it depend on the location?

I also find it interesting that this nation is awash in potentially dangerous illegal immigrants and we sort of 'get used to it.' Yet we know NOTHING of their background, health, criminal records, etc...and we have government officials chasing some guy's monkey.

We are all bozos on this bus.

Land of the free, only if we approve. What a joke.

I know I'll probably regret this....what does a pit bull have to do with exotics?

Which of the potentially dangerous domesticated animals do you get rid of? Statistically speaking, you get lots more injuries due to equines, bovines, etc. Can the gov't protect us from ourselves?

What right does anyone have to own a potentially dangerous car? Baseball bat? Kitchen knife?

Good point. We have much better, and much more important, things to worry about than the neighbor's chihuahua.

More people get killed by pit bulls and pit bull mixes than they do by vending machines.

I'm more worried about fat people or whole milk.

Its a not so simple question of freedom. But as I've always said there are two kinds of freedom....freedom from and freedom to.

I wonder how those who would allow unrestricted access to 'exotic' animals might feel if the guy next door to you put up a ten foot chain link and came home toting a pair of lions.

To answer Chad's question...there are several parallels and I'm not the one making them... those who own exotics will claim that their 'pets' are no more dangerous than your pit bull. And I agree with them...they are no more and no LESS dangerous.

As to the 'stupid people' comment, I think you have to be a bit 'off' to even want to own animals with the distinct potential to kill you or those around you.

Still would like someone to explain to me where you would draw the lines around this one, if at all.
