Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Arnold For Gov Commercial

What a crock!!!! All he says in the commercial are generalized slogans and with a bad accent on top of that. He still has not proposed any real solutions to the state' s financial problems and is having an economic council meeting to figure out what he wants to do. A lot of smoke and mirrors with no substance whatsoever. He should stick to making movies.

Here' s some text from Arnold' s website. A lot of this info is the same text used in his commercial. And here' s his website link.

Quote:
California' s political history and traditions were laid down nearly ninety years ago by the progressive reforms of Hiram Johnson. The principles were clear: bipartisanship was cherished, progress was prized over politics and the will of the people was paramount. It was upon these principles that our state was built. California became a beacon for the rest of the nation and the world.

But today we are in a different place. There is an enormous disconnect between the people of California and the politicians of California. We the people, are doing our job--working hard, paying our taxes and raising our families. They, the politicians are not doing their job. They fiddle, they fumble, and they fail.

It is time to return California to the people.

Back in my bodybuilding days, Arnold was at the top of the heap and was idolized by me and many others.

I knew he was a Republican and claimed to be conservative, so I was glad to see him join in the fray. However, after hearing what little he has said, it appears to me that he' s as liberal as the others and I' ve lost faith in him.

The latest polls now have the lt. governor leading the race. I hope a conservative can get the job, but I' ll settle for Arnold if we can' t get a good one in there. A Republican governor may be enough to put California in President Bush' s column making the other " either way" states moot.

Arnie really blew it when he named Warren Buffet as his economic adviser. Unless the 2nd richest man in the U.S. is telling the truth. How about it Cal.? Buffet commented to a reporter as to how low property taxes are in California! He told of how high taxes were in a modest home he owns in another state in comparison to a luxury home he owns in Cal. I don' t think the general public in California wanted to hear that.

I think I will give him a little time to get his Ideas out. Of course since I don,t live out there I would not be able to vote for any of them. He is new at this game though so I would listen a while before ruling him out. They will have a mess out there no matter what.

Cougar, it depends on how you define property tax as being too low or too high. In most states, property tax is used to generate revenue for local governments (cities and counties) and not for the states. Most states uses sales tax, income tax and other taxes to generate revenue. The states may get part of the property tax but it does not make up the bulk of their tax revenue.

In CA, the citizens instituted Prop 13 which capped property tax at 1% of the acquisition value and limited it from being raised more than 2% of that acquisition value from year to year. On average, it reduced Californians property tax rates by 57% when it wwas initially instituted in 1978. Since then, it decidedly favors people who hold onto their property for a long time and does use a higher assessment value for those people who buy houses or property more recently.

The reasons why Californians instituted Prop 13 were to address the problem of skyrocketing property values and to protect elderly people on fixed incomes from being unable to keep their property due to rapidly rising property taxes and to protect many Californians from abnormal increases in property values and taxes.

On average, California home prices double every 7 years. How would you like your property taxes to double every 7 years? After a while, you may be property rich but your income certainly hasn' t been doubling every 7 years and nor has your tax paying ability. And if you cash out from your overpriced home, all other property has gone up in value similarly and you are still essentially in the same boat except for now your taxes will be even higher due to the assessed value increases and your inflated acquisition price. My wife and I bought our house almost 7 years ago and its' value has more than doubled to where we could not afford to buy our own house at current prices today.

Californians have long known our property prices have been out of whack. For instance, in certain bay area cities, you will pay almost $1,000,000 (yup, 1 million $$$) for a 1200 SF house. In almost any other state, you' d pay less than $100,000 for that same size property. Californians regularly go to other states and are simply amazed at how low the real estate prices are.

If you look at Oregon, their property tax rate is limited to 5% total of the market value of a house. Look at your home state of Illinois--They assess houses at 16% of their market value for tax purposes, 38% for commercial propert and 36% for industrial property. You notice how Buffet conveniently forgets to mention the state where his " modest home" is located? I bet it' s New York (highest tax rates in the country) or some state right behind them on tax levels.

Warren Buffet may be slick at picking winning stocks and playing the market but that sure doesn' t make him an expert on property taxation or how to run a state' s economy. From the few things I' ve heard him say so far, he' s basically a socialist and has no clue about what it takes for a common man to make a living.
