Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Texas Versus California

This is an older joke about a shooting event that happened about a year ago. The joke has a lot of meaning, especially since Texas just wooed another business (Waste Connections) away from California.

Texas, California, and the Tale of the Coyote

January 14, 2011 by Dan Mitchell

I’ve already had a couple of blog posts commenting on how Texas is kicking California’s you-know-what. Being a fiscal policy person, I always point to California’s punitive state income tax as an example of bad policy and highlight the absence of any income tax in Texas to explain the success of that state.
But sometimes it’s just culture and attitude. Here’s a joke comparing the two states, but it’s based on something that actually happened in Texas.
CALIFORNIA: The Governor of California is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A coyote jumps out, bites the Governor and attacks his dog.
1. The Governor starts to intervene, but reflects upon the movie “Bambi” and then realizes he should stop; the coyote is only doing what is natural.
2. He calls animal control. Animal Control captures the coyote and bills the State $200 testing it for diseases and $500 for relocating it.
3. He calls a veterinarian. The vet collects the dead dog and bills the State $200 for testing it for diseases.
4. The Governor goes to hospital and spends $3,500 getting checked for diseases from the coyote and on getting his bite wound bandaged.
5. The running trail gets shut down for 6 months while Fish & Game conducts a $100,000 survey to make sure the area is free of dangerous animals.
6. The Governor spends $50,000 in state funds to implement a “coyote awareness” program for residents of the area.
7. The State Legislature spends $2 million to study how to better treat rabies and how to permanently eradicate the disease throughout the world.
8. The Governor’s security agent is fired for not stopping the attack somehow and for letting the Governor attempt to intervene.
9. Additional cost to State of California: $75,000 to hire and train a new security agent with additional special training re: the nature of coyotes.
10. PETA protests the coyote’s relocation and files suit against the State.
TEXAS: The Governor of Texas is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A Coyote jumps out, bites the Governor’s leather boot, and attacks his dog.
1. The Governor shoots the coyote with his State-issued pistol and keeps jogging. The Governor has spent $0.50 on a .45 ACP hollow
point cartridge.
2. The buzzards eat the dead coyote.
And that, boys and girls, is why California is broke………..And, more importantly, why too much government doesn’t work.

You have to add the PETA lawsuit to the Texas list too. Just add the comment that the judge throws it out as being frivolous.

Honestly, the state of California needs to stop legislating everything. They are becoming a communist state that dictates how the residents live more and more as each year goes on.

They need to do a purge on a lot of their laws, and let people live with more freedoms again. Ditching some of their draconian laws that provide burdens to companies and residents would go a long way towards easing their money issues.

I've had some interesting discussions on the impact of their "green" laws. I still can't quite grasp them in their entirety. What a quagmire of laws.

The only other more restrictive states in many regards are Illinois, New Jersey, and New York. They are better in many areas, but still so bad in many other aspects. There are four states that I will not move to, and will avoid visiting if at all possible because as a visitor I have so few rights compared to my native state.

Wow...a post that is anecdotal, praises common sense, highlights the absurdity of certain segments of acedemia and the gov't, makes the South (westerner) look good and the preppy look stupid...even has dogs in it...and no comments about any of these? What gives?

Don't know how you handle it Cal...

You won't see Kalifornia do anything remotely resembling rolling back any of their 'laws for idiots'. IN fact, you will see more and more laws being passed, to cover each and every single niggling little incident that is not already exhaustively regulated or proscribed. It will get progressively more expensive to live in Kalifornia. As the expense rises, more and more companies will move out. THey will take some kalifornia sphincters with them because Texas is not TOO far from crapland...as more and more sphincters relocate to Texas, they will realize political power and work to make Texas more like 'home'. Be careful what you wish for, my Texan friends....

California has a lot of laws governing so many different things. It's ridiculous. I don't know why people stay there, outside of the nice weather anyways.

I wonder how long it will be, before having a list of what you can do will be more helpful than trying to know the laws stating what you can't do are?
