Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Another RINO in the Senate

Aside from the Presidential race, there are some other races that are also important.

Senator Dick Lugar (R-IN) is mad at the Tea Party. He believes the Tea Party destroyed the chances for Republican majority in the Senate at the last elections. He claims that if the Tea Party wants a Republican majority – which, by the way, has never been a goal of the Tea Party to start with – they will have to vote for the old elitist guard like him who have the experience to do politics as usual.
Let’s see what good Lugar has done. Worked to continue pouring federal money into agriculture. Voted for the DREAM Act. Enthusiastic supporter of sending American troops to die for the interests of the elite. Supported Obama’s judicial nominations to the Supreme Court – both pro-abortion with a vengeance. Voted to include criticism of sodomy in the definition of “hate crime.” Voted to increase his own salary. Voted for TARP. Voted for federal gun control. And these are only the tip of the iceberg. Who knows how much lobbying money one will find, if Lugar is investigated just as thoroughly as Gingrich.
But he says, “A Republican majority in the Senate is very important.” Uh huh. It very important to have Rs voting than Ds. For the same laws, of course. But Rs is better. In truth, it is only important to Lugar. The Tea Party’s goal has never been to maintain a Republican majority. It was the Tea Party that developed the term RINO. Lugar fits that term perfectly.

The Tea Party comes close to being that third party everyone talks about. The Republicans can build an unbeatable majority by forming a coalition with the Tea Party rather than joining the Liberal Socialist Party in condemning it.

Lugar is a RINO. He would be an independent if it would get him votes. He is always following the chow line.

I completely agree with this and would add that the Tea Party is somewhat analogous to being the conscience of the Republican Party.

In some sense there are two definitions of "political party" in play. According to one definition, a political party is a unity of people to band together as a team to overcome some other team. This is the "Democratic party, right or wrong" and the "Republican party, right or wrong" mentality. This kind of political party seems to lead to a hierarchy of personalities or characters.

Another definition of political party -- one that seems to apply to the Tea Party -- is a unity of ideas or a unity of principles. Thus, the Tea Party is not wedded to and is not tied to allegiance to specific individuals, they are tied to and allied with specific principles. My bet is that if a Democrat had demonstrated their adherence to the principles of small government and originalist constitutional construction . . . the Tea Party would embrace that Democrat. Likewise, a Republican that has consistently acted against these same principles would NOT be embraced by the Tea Party.

I wish this were true, but I often feel that Republican politicians have no particular principles -- and hence do not adhere to Tea Party principles. Certainly I would have expected Republicans to embrace budgetary discipline, but they overwhelmingly failed to act in accord with this principle when they had strong positions early in the Bush administration. That was a major disappointment for me.

I've said it many times before, had the prescription drug benefit not pass, the GW years would have looked great budget wise. The last budget they had control of was 07. The deficit was just over 200 billion. Noe with Obama, 1.5 trilllion and not a single budget passed to date.

I agree with that. My earlier obsrvation about the Tea Party "is somewhat analogous to being the conscience of the Republican Party" isn't as clear as I could have made it. I think the Tea Party principles do outline what many conservative Republicans believe and I also believe the TP serves as a useful alternative/competition in some congressional elections. I think the TP can help nudge the Republican party back towards its' leaner roots.

Some Republicans do adhere to those principles. Unfortunately, not all Republicans do.

Now that is an extremely interesting observation.
