The Republicans have always maintained they are 'for' tax cuts. This is in the context of 'smaller government', less 'appropriation of private funds', etc. When the 'payroll tax cut' was pushed by the left, it was seen by right-thinking people as an escalation for the end of Social Security, since this tax is the only thing that FUNDS social security. When the ersatz tax-cut was proposed for extension (ostensibly to help the economy), it was expected to be opposed by republicans because it does NOT help any segment of the economy, and it actually HURTS social security. THe political aspect of it is to corner republicans so it can be claimed they are NOT really supportive of tax cuts, or else they would support this particular tax cut. Well, it looks like Boehner and the republicans are going to shove this whole issue where the 'sun don't shine'...
