Both quotes have the same reference, but the Ecclesiastes 10:2 verse is right on

Origin of Left & Right

I have often wondered why it is that Conservatives are called the "right" and Liberals are called the "left."

By chance I stumbled upon this verse in the Bible: "The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
but the heart of the fool to the left."
Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV)

"A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left"
Ecclesiastes 10:2 (KJV)

Thus sayeth the Lord. Amen.

Can't get any simpler than that.

That's the first time I have heard that explanation.

The explanation I've heard is realted to the arrangement of groups at the National Convention/National Assembly in France during the early French Revolution. The group that wanted more radical change was on the left; the group that wanted less change was no the right; the group in the middle was half-way inbetween in its political tendencies.
